The NEO Preparedness Act calls upon the NASA Administrator to establish an Office of Potentially Hazardous Near-Earth Object Preparedness. That office would “prepare the United States for readiness to avoid and to mitigate collisions with potentially hazardous near-Earth objects in collaboration with other Agencies through the identification of situation- and decision-analysis factors and selection of procedures and systems.”

I would have to say that the reasons for this are quite obvious.
One need only look at our planet to realize that we can be hit at any time.

Of course it would be optimal if this were an international project since the whole planet is at risk and not just the US.

Intense topic there, Rabbit, Star!

I'm always interested in this, ever since the comet Shumaker-Levy
impacted Jupiter in 1993. Seeing that, woke the world up, and quickened
our thoughts about the number one thing in a human's instinct:

Self-preservation!!!

Personally, i believe that all the recent space shuttle missions have
something to do with the plan to either recognize potential space hazards;
and/or actually study what exactly the best option will be in protecting
life on earth!
