Computer Taught To Recognize Attractiveness In Women

"Beauty," goes the old saying, "is in the eye of the beholder." But does the beholder have to be human?

Update!

Not necessarily, say scientists at Tel Aviv University. Amit Kagian, an M.Sc. graduate from the TAU School of Computer Sciences, has successfully "taught" a computer how to interpret attractiveness in women. But there's a more serious dimension to this issue that reaches beyond mere vanity. The discovery is a step towards developing artificial intelligence in computers. Other applications for the software could be in plastic and reconstructive surgery and computer visualization programs such as face recognition technologies.

"Until now, computers have been taught how to identify basic facial characteristics, such as the difference between a woman and a man, and even to detect facial expressions," says Kagian. "But our software lets a computer make an aesthetic judgment. Linked to sentiments and abstract thought processes, humans can make a judgment, but they usually don't understand how they arrived at their conclusions."

In the first step of the study, 30 men and women were presented with 100 different faces of Caucasian women, roughly of the same age, and were asked to judge the beauty of each face. The subjects rated the images on a scale of 1 through 7 and did not explain why they chose certain scores. Kagian and his colleagues then went to the computer and processed and mapped the geometric shape of facial features mathematically.

And i thought "Artificial Intelligence" was when i purchased the answers
to an upcoming test back in high school!

Cool find, Saad, Star!

This field has really evolved, huh? From military applications, to identifying
casino cheats, to helping victims of crime, draw composites of a suspect.
Now beauty characteristics! And i thought the perfect female was three &
a 1/2 feet tall, with a flat head, and turned into a pizza & a twelve-pack
at midnight!!! just kidding!

Here's a Link
that helps explain it a little.

thanks anytime champ

Soon we will have AI robots living for us and we can just sit on our ass but what happens if thay become out of control ay?

Exaaaactly, Saad, what if the robots with AI "decide" to take over?

Beauty won't have much to do with it, huh? Lots of movies about this,
from '2001 A Space Odyssey' to 'Lost in Space' ("Kill the Robinsons") to
'I Robot' ("Runnnnn") with Will Smith...

Robots Overtake Humans?

There is already a thread about this somewhere. But still interesting
.

We are living in interesting times, just wait and see how computers, technology, video games etc wil be in 10-20 years time. That is if we live that long lol

Actually based upon my years of reading ATS and other sources, I am much more inclined to think we will be the AI robots. I don't think they are going to be seperate entities. I believe we will merge the robotics and nano-techs into our biological bodies. Indeed, cyborgs
I think they call this the singularity point?..

That reminds me of a phrase/quote.

"Live long enough and you'll live forever"

Eventually we will upload our minds/souls to robotic shells, or just have so much robotic technology intergrated into us, our biological shells, that we will be 'clinically immortal'.

Yes the make OUR body live longer is definetly possible.

But the idea of uploading your mind to another shell doesn't make sense to me.
For example if you clone yourself with the same mind, you wouldn't BE that clone, it would be someone else. That has the same mind.

Conciousness is truly facinating.

Yeah I agree. I believe the mind and the soul are actually seperate from the body and brain. When I said upload I didn't mean it in the sense that you could upload to multiple shells. I don't think that will be the case. I think it will be a 'transfer'.

Conciousness is truly facinating.

The most fascinating of things!

Concerning the article:

The word 'taught' is misleading. The computer didn't 'learn' to see beauty. It was programmed. This is still all math when it comes down to it. No sentience here. Impressive programing, but it's still just based on mathematical algorithms and such.

I think the goverments who try to rule us and own us are happening now with micro chips in our arms and all and think about it a soldier is a machine working for the goverment its out of control now thay do control a huge sociaty now days.

It will first be used in sinister ways. It will first be for military applications. The Governments will no doubt try and prevent it from reaching civilian level... but soon enough it will be open and available for the public.
