High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse/HEMP~ SPAWARS

This is the sort of thing, that companies and civilians may find useful for protecting their electronics. Doubt it would have to be used actually but it never hurts to have the information available should it be needed.

Does any one have any ideas on a practical use for this?

This interface control document (ICD) defines the interface between the High-altitude
Electro-Magnetic Pulse (HEMP) protection hardware of the Tenant system and the
HEMP vault of the Terminal Equipment Building (TEB). The Tenant system
consists of the Fixed Distributed System (FDS). The FDS HEMP Protection System
(FDS HPS) provides HEMP protection to the TEB from transients on the FDS
cables.
The HEMP vault conduit provides electrical shielding and mechanical protection for
the power/ground cables, system signal fiber, status/control fibers, and low voltage dc
cables between TCTB and the EMB wall.

Since the early 80's ATT and all the baby bells were designing "central office" building (att for switching equipment) to withstand EMP. Underground vaults located near such facilities followed this protocol. The buildings themselves are build like bunkers with vast basements and generator systems. They are also not centralized, in order to distribute communications in case any single (or several) building fail. Each building has a hefty grounding field surrounding it and a central grounding bus to absorb stray currents.

For many years Kansas City was the "central" switching center and a single high alttitude nuke would kill all communications. The internet started as a military system to provide alternate communication needs in case of an attack.
