Maybe if the "national service" was geared towards internal security and self-defense this would also help foster a sense of national pride and identity.
If immigrants were also subject to this requirement it may also help breakdown social barriers and help with integration.

Unfortunately politicians allow political ideaology to limit their proposed solutions.

Surely the situation has deteriorated enough to warrant some sort of cross party "task force" being empowered to investigate causes and solutions whilst free of political restraints.

No doubt the PC brigade will rail against any such suggestions as any form of "national service" would be seen as militarisation and cross party politics reduces their influence and encourages best practice and solutions free from dogma.

Well, to me it's very clear why kids are so "out of control". As Nietzsche once said "Regarding life, the wisest men of all ages have judged alike: it is worthless." They are just trying to nullify their lives by living dangerously. They probably don't know that though.

I think the defence budget is stretched enough without the need to support thousands of conscripts

I'd rather the money be spent on new equipment for our troops at the front and the various new planes, ships and other vehicles being introduced.

I can see what you're getting at, though, and I think that something similar to that could be used as an alternative to prison. Minor offenders are sent to a 'boot camp', run like an army barracks. A bit like Bad Lads' Army, if you ever saw that series a few years ago. I'd be curious to see if it would help offenders to get back onto the straight and narrow by providing them some structure and order in their lives (which is lacking amongst many of the deprived young kids). A trial would be interesting.

At the same time, I think a multi-pronged approach to fighting crime is needed. As well as punishing and rehabilitating those who commit crimes, we should work out ways to prevent people turning to crime in the first place - encouraging community cohesion, ensuring kids get a good education and so on. I would also point out that, as much as we like to blame them, it's not all the government's fault; parents have a huge impact on their children's lives, and if they drink excessively, take drugs, break the law and so on then their children are more likely to do the same. It's all about human nature and learning from our parents.

This entire area is one that is very, very difficult to solve and it needs an effort from a combination of government (both central and local), the police, schools/teachers, communities, families and individuals if we are to sort it out.

I am certainly not advocating that this extra expense come out of the defence budget.
I agree with you whole heartedly, our Military is grossly under funded and our military personnel are suffering.
I think the persistent under funding of our military is worthy of a thread in itself.

With a complete review of the benefit system, including the implementation of private sector managemet systems and procedures, large amounts of cash would be freed up to fund the programme.
In addition, at the moment vast amounts of money is wasted in the public sector either in benefit fraud and unnecessary bureaucracy and red tape.

One thing is certain, a change of policy is required because current approaches are not working.

How about terminating "youth correction" centres and throwing them into boot camps where army instructors can rag the **** out of them physically without the goddamn EU human rights bill getting involved.

"Bad Lads Army" type thing... definitely a good idea I reckon.

Prison shouldnt be a 3* b&b with a side order of buggery. It should be hard labour/ serving back your country for your crimes.

I have a theory that all the violence in inner cities is a result of pent up aggression. There is no other time in history where a large percentage of men arent in the army fighting... There are some people who are intrinsically violent and are best suited to military roles.

Who knows, this boot camp idea might even make some think twice about being a smackhead and make them consider the idea of joining the army.

Erm the current times are not like the past, whilst aggression is needed so if self restraint, you don't want psychopathic soldiers killing anything in sight becuase they aren't right in the head. I don't think the UN would like us for that.

As for the boot camps, yes i've been wanting this for a long time, instead of correction centres or youth prisons, send them to these places, use real soliders to run the palce and allow them to beat and beast them as much as they want if they don't behave.

Prison labour is somethig we should use as well, instead of paying council workers and just using people on public service orders, why not use prisoners? Shackle them together, give the guards a shotgun and let them dig railways and roads. That might stop them from going back to prison, and if it doesn't, well at least they're doing some good for the country as a whole. Sitting in a cell for 18 hours a day does no good for anyone.

All i was saying is that violence is an intrinsic part of human nature, which if allowed to boil over unchecked will explode.

If these angry youngsters were given a bayonet on a rifle and told to stab sand bags, box professionally in a ring or whatever else; it would be a source of release of anger.

atm theyre just getting more and more angry until they lapse into meaningless drunken fighting outside the pub.

Violence is a part of animal nature, we as humans have a higher brain which we can use to negate it. People like you and i don't go beating others for that very reason.

These kids are just aware that they can get away with it, they have never been disciplined and know their rights. They know that if they're underage and beat someone up then their sentence will be limited at best unless they're unlucky adn come across a sensible judge.

They have not received the needed discipline at home and so they need a good dose of it in later life. The camps you suggest along the lines of bad boys army are a great idea. The only difference with that tv program and these camps would be that violence could be used and they wouldn't be allowed to just leave if it were to hard.

Maybe if they realised that someone will punish them, and they saw how hard it was compared to keeping their nose clean, then maybe we could fix our society.

One of the major thigns that needs to be done urgently is a full review of everyone on benefits. I'm not well at the moment and can't work and i can't tell you how angry i get at these morons sitting at home, watching tv all day when they have perfectly healthy bodies. That above all else grates me down to the bone and it needs to be stopped.
