May be you can see with MidnighDStroyer. He was in the USN I think.

Otherwise, a cruiser is cruising and a destroyer is destroying.
For the frigates, I'm not sure, but I think that a frigate is " frigating ".

Np - I know it doesn't have a definative answer, but as it says the classification does differ in between navies and also eras. I am also ex-navy (not US), but the only thing I really remember (not that I was that interested) about the actual classifaction of ship classes was it is determined by a combination of tonnage and capability.

Erm falcon, can't you just search for this on the web? Why do that instead of trying to make others do it for you?

A little gift

Go to google and type 'US Navy ship classification'

and the first page on the list is:
www.nvr.navy.mil...

should have all the information you are after, and from the horses mouth

It used to be a pretty straightforward matter of tonnage and gunnery and even the various International Naval treaties: heavy cruisers were 10,000 tons max. and 8-inch main armament, light cruisers were 8,000 max or thereabouts with 6-inch guns and destroyers were smaller and frigates smaller still and sometimes faster.
Some modern frigates are bigger than WWII cruisers and I'm not sure if there's any system any longer -especially as turreted guns are getting to be a thing of the past. I think that cruisers will still probably be the biggest of the three classifications.

A- The bigger ship is a CRUISER (like in starwars...) It is more weaponed but quite slow.
B-A destroyer is slower than a frigate and not necessary faster than a cruiser, but it'really great armed.
C-A frigate is a fast, light boat. In France we have even a model of furtive frigate (I don't know if us got some)
