I study survival because i enjoy it, i have been camping since i was about 8 with friends and family. Survival was a useful thing when camping in some woods.

In the end though it's like any hobby, i just enjoy the act of studying survival, i enjoy making shelters, lighting fires with a fire bow and other survival techniques. The added bonus of my hobby is that it can be useful, that's just a bonus really

I study survival because I want to be that guy who sounds like he really knows his stuff as he leads his followers off to their horrible death.

I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.

On a more truthful note, I study survival on ATS because I love to learn. It's the same reason I study the NWO threads, The Crypto threads and just about everything else I run across on this board.

This board is so varied, I have been able to contribute something to just about any conversation I've stumble upon, since I joined this site. It's very educational.

Still, If situation X ever does arise, you might not want to follow my advice

Just in case. One never knows when a situation will arise that you need to know how to start a fire, skin a bunny, etc...

Plus, I'm a tad on the paranoid side. The less I'm dependant upon the goodwill of others, the better I like it. Simple survival skills are part of that.

Well said Redmoon, you took the words out of my mouth, I will add that for me it started when I began to realize, many years ago, how complacent we have become, people can hardly venture from their house nor vehicle.
I found most people behaving as aliens in Mother nature, and for some reason it terrified me. They had forgotten that inner voice, the natural manner off finding your way on paths that aren't paved in concrete, to listen, to observe.
They could hardly survive in an urban environment, they had to surround them selves with locks, alarms and weapons, they had forgotten.
I didn't want to get lost like that, I wanted to be able to walk with ease every where, in the city in the wild. Because I realized it is all "nature" it just has different faces.
The joy and the dangers are the same.

So, I guess that's what triggered my interest, the urge to be more than an observer.
I think it is more about living then survival.
