Source | Reuters | China gives Tibetan protesters surrender ultimatum
The official Tibetan judicial authorities gave protesters until Monday night to turn themselves in and benefit from leniency.
"Criminals who do not surrender themselves by the deadline will be sternly punished according to the law," said a notice on the Tibetan government Web site (www.tibet.gov.cn).
International pressure mounted on Beijing to show restraint. Australia, the United States and Europe urged the Chinese authorities to find a peaceful outcome, while Taiwan, which China claims as its own, predictably condemned Beijing for launching a crackdown.
Xinhua news agency said 10 "innocent civilians" had been shot or burnt to death in the street clashes in the remote, mountain capital which has been sealed off. The dead included two people killed by shotguns.
A source close to the Tibetan government-in-exile, however, questioned the official death toll of 10. He said at least five Tibetan protesters had been shot dead by troops.
Some Tibet monitoring organisations outside the country put the death toll at up to 32.

Wonder why we didn't tell France the same things when Muslims were, ahem, protesting in Paris.
"Guys, we know the theocratic sorts are setting fire to the city, but please, use restraint!"

Thus the whole "rioting and setting fire to stuff" right?
Ah well. I can't blame them - or the folks in Paris. When put into a crap position by a government that just will not listen, well, what're you gonna do?

DHARAMSHALA, India (AFP) - The Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, on Saturday said he backs China's right to host the Olympics after Beijing reportedly charged he was trying to sabotage the summer Games.
The statement came after media reports on Friday said China's top official in Tibet, Zhang Qingli, had accused the Dalai Lama of trying to "sabotage this important event and spread rumours."

stuff.co.nz | Gere sees Olympics boycott if China mishandles Tibet
China should suffer a boycott of its cherished Beijing Olympics if it mishandles protests in restive Tibet, Hollywood actor and Tibetan activist Richard Gere said on Friday.
Gere, a close follower of the Dalai Lama and chairman of the International Campaign for Tibet, stressed that neither the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader nor the ICT advocates a boycott of the Summer Olympics.
But he said it was his personal opinion that it would be "unconscionable" to attend the Beijing Games if China failed to deal peacefully with unrest in the Himalayan region – protests that have turned to riots and already claimed several lives.
"I've not been pro-boycott, but I think if this is not handled correctly, yes we should boycott. Everyone should boycott," Gere told Reuters in a telephone interview.

I'm tired of explain this, but to quote some words I posted in other thread
==========
American always show their ignorance in this forum.
Tibet was conquered by communist in 1950? and Xinjiang was also
conquered by communist in 1950?
look at your own map published before 1950, please.
if you can't find any old map, I will show a picture grasped in a famous
documentary made by USA-"why we fight", and see Tibet and Xinjiang were
within whose territory. say nothing of Taiwan, it is USA who give
Taiwan back to China.
I'm tired of teaching those ignorant Americans about history,
Almost all Americans I meet here are full of bias about China,
Yes, American hate communist, it is your business,
but if you hurt the territorial integrity of China, you insult all Chinese
people. if your people keeps on your bias, the hatred between the two
people will be deepen.

So following your logic, if Europe and Russia think its needed to invade the USA they have the right also?

China has the right to do what it needs to do, I blame the Kosovo independence movement for starting this whole mess. When is Israel going to give up it's land, never, that's when. The U.S. can't start bombing China like they did to Yougoslavia under clinton and there will not be any NATO troops in Tibet. WWIII is well under way.
The Chinese Army drove through the streets of Lhasa today parading dozens of Tibetan prisoners in handcuffs, their heads bowed, as troops stepped up their hunt for the rioters in house-to-house searches.
As the midnight deadline approached for rioters to surrender, four trucks in convoy made a slow progress along main roads, with about 40 people, mostly young Tibetan men and women, standing with their wrists handcuffed behind their backs, witnesses said.
A soldier stood behind each prisoner, hands on the back of their necks to ensure their heads were bowed.
