With all the knowledge here - this is my question. Why could you not take
old used up oil wells and pump them with barnyard waste and make methane wells?

Probably because you need oxygen for the microbes to break down that material, but that's a hot idea if you can figure a way to make it work. It may take a lifetime to get a commercial result.

Personally having driven a Toyota Prius the other day I suspect it is better to move away from fossil fuels (except for aviation).

New Zealand looks fat and happy. We have recently discovered three oil fields in the seas around us with reserves similar to the North Sea.

for the same reason that the government doesn't mandate that all new houses and buildings be built with solar panels. and the same reason that massive government spending is not being spent on tidal power plants throughout the many inlets around the country. the oil companies and the wealthy connected to the oil industry would lose money and that is who dictates and controls american energy policy. this country is run for the benefit of wealthy people.

Oil wells are not huge underground holes, oil mainly comes from porous rock.
