People that throw trash from their cars and leave their fast food drinks and bags in parking lots are the worst kind of human being there is.

They simply assume that others are responsible for picking up after them? Did they learn that at home?

I say roll out the guillotines and decrease that surplus portion of the population

That bugs me too. And smokers who dump there ciggarette butts everywhere. Even when there is a trash can or ash tray near by.

One thing I'm noticing here in this windy desert community where I live is that more litter comes from the trash at the fast food places a mile away than from the casual litterbug driving by.

Many of the dumpsters at fast food joints as well as local contractors have their dumpster lids left open and the winds along with the dust devils suck the trash out and redistribute it.

McDonalds seems to be the worst offender here.

If you want to see what a poor neighbor they are and you're traveling through Pearblossom, California take a look at the east fence on their big truck parking lot.
Wind blows McDonalds trash against the wire fence of the house next door and it virtually covers the fence and goes over it onto the property the house sits on.

Along those same lines, here the contractors building tract homes will use a large bulldozer to grade the tumbleweeds etc. off the ground and pile them up in a large pile.
They're not allowed to burn them and they don't care to have them hauled to the dump so they just let the wind take them.

People will say, it's the desert and it's to be expected when you live here.

Not really, one overnight windstorm covered my half acre with tumbleweeds almost two deep.

A lot of work to haul off and quite a bit of expense since the dump is 12-15 miles away.

It won't happen again, if they start grading the remaining 100 acres I'll have photos - have some already - and be talking to the authorities and the local paper....

I live in a large city and people throw trash out the car windows all the time. People eat their lunches in their cars at shopping malls and then leave their drink cups and other trash in the lot. My front yard gets littered with beer bottles and cigarette butts that bums throw from their cars as they drive by.

I read an article where some woman was selling tumble weeds on ebay and making some bucks, sounds like opportunity for someone.

I wonder where some people got the idea that others will clean up after them, and of course, others always do.

Why does society tolerate those losers?

This topic really bugs the hell out of me because I deal with it on a daily basis.
I maintain the property around our building along a very busy street and sometimes it seems people just use it as a garbage dump, and some do.

I pick up tossed coffee cups, water bottles, beer cans, plus other stuff almost every day. I've had a load of brick and drywall scraps dumped, entire bags of household garbage, even dirty diapers just tossed on the side lawn.

Dog poop is a whole other story, some people think our yard is a toilet.

One day after seeing a lady let her dog go on our grass I grabbed a rubber glove, picked the crap up and followed her down the block to her house. Carrying a warm fresh dog crap in your hand is gross even if you have a surgical glove on, but I rang her door bell and told her she had dropped something. I then tossed it past her into the house and walked away.

I've never seen her walk her dog past our building again.

Don't you take her crap AD!! Give it straight back. Nicely done.

To the op.

In Hong Kong there is a spot fine for dropping littler of HK$ 1500, (that's $180ish US) when it was introduced there was lots of litter wardens around with camera crews. They fined a lot of people and shamed them on the tele. The litter problem has been drastically reduced. There is also the same fine for spitting in the street.

Yep, there's a pesticide. A real sharp stick poked in the eye.

There are people at my work place who have dumped their ashtray out next to their car. I just don't get that! If I ever see one of them I most definately would let the building mgr know about it.

It’s amazing how many people act like they live in a landfill, and don’t seem to mind. And if it weren't for those of us who pick up after them cities would be landfills. The city I live in doesn't seem to do anything to keep it from happening.

We have fines here in America too but they are not enforced. Litter wardens would be shot dead, so that wouldn't work

I think litterbugs are a government protected species and it would be against the law to poke out their eye or do any harm to them without facing jail time and a lawsuit

There sure is a pesticide for them, its called a swift kick in the ass!

I had a friend who's mother would return the litter to the owner if she saw it happen.

Once, some guy dumped his incar ashtray virtually right beside a garbage can. She grabbed a plastic bag from the car, scooped up what she could and knocked on his window, bag in hand. Much to the drivers dismay, she returned as much of the ashtray to him as possible. Man, was he embarased/pissed.

Darn, I should have listed this on the pet peeves thread! There is nothing that bothers me more than this. Everyday I have to clean up pop cans, cig butts, food wrappers and god knows what else off of my sidewalks, gardens and bushes. My kids get blasted when I catch them throwing stuff on the ground. Put it in your pocket or give it to me to throw away at home. I've gone so far as to walk up someone's driveway and throw an apple core in their green bin, or a pop can in their recycle box if for some reason I can't carry it back home..better there than on their lawn.

And the dog poop thing..don't get me started! It's ALWAYS one of my kids that steps in it I swear!

Every spring and fall a local church in our area has a neighbourhood cleanup. I take my kids and my daycare kids to it everytime. Last year they had 30 people take part and we managed to gather FORTY bags of garbage and 10 bags of recyclables...unreal.

Seems like California had a reward for turning in litterbugs.
Not sure if Arizona where I live does or not.

A guy with a camera could make a fairly good living in some places.

The road next to my house is bit of a main road through this country like area.

I've had thoughts about setting the ol' videocam outside up under the eaves and pointed down the road.

Some of the stuff I find in my fenced yard is too heavy for the usual winds to blow over the 4' fence and it would be nice to get some of the perpetrators on tape and turn em in.

I have another one for you.

We put out the garbage for pick-up Tuesday night and the truck comes by early the next morning. But during the night people come along and open the bags looking for cans and bottles, or bits of metal they can return for refund or scrap.

The thing is that they sometimes dump the bag out and the truck won't pick up loose garbage. We then have to go out and re-bag it and wait for next week to have it picked up.
