Serbian Government Break Up Over Kosovo

Serbia's Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica has announced his resignation and called for new elections.
The decision follows his failure to get his cabinet to reject closer ties with the European Union in the wake of Kosovo's declaration of independence.

Mr Kostunica, a moderate nationalist, has described the decision by EU states to recognise Kosovo as illegal.

How will this affect Serbias no force policy on Kosovos independece. Will the new elections lift up more nationalistic government factions, or will the moderates prevail? Will the Serbian military cease this opportinity to stage a coup in order the confront KFOR and Kosovo Albanians?

Kosovo has become an independant state and it has choked the serbs in their throats.Its very simple the serbs can't do anything except sit and moan about kosovo.

Serbs will not take any millitary action because it will turn into a very bloody conflict.Overall its not gona help them gain anything in the end.

Natural conclusion to international forces destroying a sovereign nation. We've seen this all before. It's like the modern Western world just tore up every history book they could find and ran out the door with scissors so they could play by the pool and go swimming right after they ate.

Ultra Nationalist hard-liner is what I am expecting to come of this. The Serbs do not want to lose Kosovo and I think there is enough populist support to put some hard nose Serbia First kind of guy in office. I say good for them.

Also, if NATO were faced with direct force and heavy resistance they would pull out and drop the whole thing. The Europeans are not in possession of a strong will to fight for questionable justification (See Afghanistan an dthe pending defeat of NATO).

Don't really need NATO to defend Kosova.Just arm the kosovan guirellas with some hi-tech weapons and that will be the end of Serbian army.

The EU and the US should have stayed out of this issue entirely.

Problem with that is Kosovo independence is a violation of UN law, which a good portion of the world believes in, including Russia. If the Kosovars were armed by the west and a Hard Line Pro-Serbian Slavic type gets in power in Serbia than we could very well see the Russians not only arming the newly existing and massive (populist causes make big armies!) Serbian National Army but also having military advisors on the ground in Kosovo and Serbia legally under UN mandate a la Vietnam or Korea.
Could be real bad real quick.

As it came up in another thread, if Russia was to play any moderate or big part in a Serbia V Kosovo situation, NATO would probably fold and withdraw as to avoid any combat situations against Russian air or ground forces.

I really don't see Nato or EU arming a muslim querilla organisation anytime soon, even those in power have a memory. (not a long one, but as they're still getting frequent reminders of that policy in Afganistan...)

Agreed. Not unlike the last NATO intervention in the Balkans, when a Russian Heavy Mechanised Division marched in to Pristina and took the airport at the end of the war. Against NATO requests.

Indeed. General Sir Michael Jackson (I love that....) was quite miffed when the Para's turned up at Pristina to find it full of Russians! Even more so when he had to do his press conference from outside, rather than in the building.

having said that, given the attitude of the Para's, they would have quite happily engaged the Russians if there was the political will. It's the main reason why the British led the ground operation into Northern Kosovo and the Yanks hung back in the South. The Americans really didn't want to be in a position where they might be shot at.
