"Additive blamed as Upcountry itch persists"
By ILIMA LOOMIS, Staff Writer
MAKAWAO - About 160 people so far have registered complaints about rashes and itchy skin problems they believe are caused by a water additive aimed at
controlling high levels of lead in some Upcountry homes.
And Dr. Lorrin Pang, the state Department of Health's Maui District health officer, said he thinks most of the complaints from Upcountry residents,
which come in around six per day, are credible.
"I believe they're believable," he said.
Pang is preparing a "blinded crossover" study that should help health and water officials verify whether the Upcountry water supply is at the root
of the skin problems.
