I did the same thing when they all came out. I haven't played III in a few years but I used to every day.

What's the questions?

questions like how come I can only win on the first two levels and it get so extreamly hard on the others? And why are they so much more advanced than me in the harder levels? One more is that I am a Mac user and i can not get the update to play online, I was wondering if someone knew how to get it????

I don't know about online, but yes the higher levels are BRUTAL!!!

I don't think anyone has beat the top level on III. At least at one time they hadn't without cheats.

As for cheats, they're out there, but I don't know them.

Heh, I really only play on Chieftan level. It just gets ridiculously hard once you go above that....

By they way, Civ 4 is in production!

I love Civ! Especially Conquests. Have you watched that video trailer that comes with Civ3? "We've ruined your life...AGAIN" It's a great game. Here's my top5 list of war games (that I've played).

1. Empire Earth
2. Civilization3: Conquests
3. Command&Conquer Generals: Zero Hour
4. Age of Kings: the Conquerors
5. Mideival Total War: Viking Invasions

You'll proabably be mad at me, but hey! It's topugh deciding between EE and Civ! They're both good!

I'm a huge fan of Alpha Centauri - a spin-off of the Civ series. I've been playing the game since it was released back in '99 at least 3 hours a day, it's also never left my hard drive since I bought it (well not unless I got a new HDD
). Mostly on-line with buddies thou or PBEM.

From the main series; I haven't been a fan of it sicne Civ2. My personal opinion is Civ3 is a big step back from Civ2. Civ3 is one of the few games that I've bought and regret buying....

I've played Civilization III a lot and enjoyed it, but I must say Alpha Centauri is the game I still play from time to time. I think the deep internal structure of Alpha C is better than Civ III. With Civ III [which is beautiful to look at] I like it up to a point, then it kind of goes flat. Ive never played much past railroads. Alpha Centauri I have played till the point that the techs are just repeating Transcendence. I usually play as the proffesor. What do you play as Djien?

For some reason, Civ3 just wasn't as fun (or addictive, I guess) as Civ2. It did get kind of flat in the Modern Age, and is it just me, or did they make tanks a LOT less powerful? Fortunately, Conquests was a huge leap foward, and more than made up for Civ3s lack of scenarios. Conquest's scenarios are the best I've ever played. Now, if only I could figure out where they're still selling Centauri so I could get it...

I'm going to have to agree- AC is definitely the better game of the bunch. Civ three gets really flat aroudn the modern age, even leading up to it. Call to Power had the right idea, but it was just too damn buggy. I've actually foudn that certain pairings work well in AC- I usually try to get my triumvir of myself as the University, along with my Pact Sisters Diedre of the Gaians and Corazon of the Spartans. Morgan/believers works well, as does hive/believers. The UN simply doesn't sit well with me, so I stake out a prime piece of island real estate, turn it into a terraformed fortress, and sell technology to my pact Sisters in exchange for protection. Surprisingly, it works well. They churn out average level troopies, and I send out a SuperMegaUltraAntiGravDeathsphere of Doom to mop of everything.

I first started Civilization I back in 1992. The first night I got it, I stayed up playing the entire day, night, and half of the next day until finally succumbing to exhaustion. I loved that game. My very first game I think I played until 2400 AD or something, way past the score cut off.

Civ for windows came out next, and I got it, played it the same way. Master of Orion came out about the same time, and I would play it right after CIV I to complete the story of my civ.

Civ 2 came out a few years later, and this game was BULLY. The music and the artwork of the leaders really gave you the spirit of competing against the greats of history. I played this game continually for about 5 years. Master of Orion 2 came out and then I started playing this game like it was my new religion. The artwork in MOO 2 was amazing for the time. That was back in 1996!

Then came Firaxis with Alpha Centauri and Alien Crossfire! Those games were super cool. I loved the atmosphere these games created.

Things remained like that until the turn of the century, and I remember getting really excited about the making of Master of Orion 3, and how it turned out to be the biggest skunk since Star Control 3. I played it one day, and returned it to the store.

I waited more and more, until they finally finished Civ 3. I didn't like the new artwork and dialogue in Civ 3. They took the soul out from the other leaders, and turned them into cartoons. I didn't like that. The music was terrible in the beginning, just a collection of drumbeats and metal clangs. The modern music and some of the medieval music is pretty good in Civ3. That's where I like to play, in the more modern eras.

I have a game going in Civ 3 right now. I usually play at the Monarch level, with no cheats. The only thing I do is create my own maps to give me an edge against the AI cheating in the harder levels. The AI in the harder levels is absurd in how it treats the human player - diplomacy is almost impossible, and they form alliances without any kind of difficulty. Another annoying thing about the AI is that AI armies can march through other AI territories without war being declared, or any kind of diplomatic agreement. Another troublesome thing is how the random number generator works, there is a "destiny value" assigned each piece that ditactes how it will do in combat against any other given unit. No saves and restarts to make a war turn in your favor like the previous civs. Well, sorta. I still do so I can pick the winners

These games are great. They should keep making them. Civ 4 you say? Ha! I hope they get rid of the cartoony artwork and get a more realistic feel to the artwork, so it will utterly rule. After all, it's a world that you build, you want to populate it with real feeling people.

I would love to meet one of you for a internet game! Send me an email @ [email protected] and we'll get together. Master of Orion 2 is also network playable, and I can send you a copy if you don't have it. Lemme know, I would LOVE a good challenge.

I was just playing Civilization 3 yesterday, trying to convince myself it's just as good as 2, but to no avail... I liked the funky warriors and weapons you get in 2, and the effects of nuclear war were far cooler, IMHO.

I'm glad to hear 4's coming out! Also, thanks for the heads-up on Alpha Centauri, I may have to check it out now!

Well I've been playing the game for so long that I'm good with any of the fractions and play them all well. I perfer the Gaians thou out of stock SMAC. With Alien Crossfire my fraction of choice is the Manifold Usurpers.

I only have Call to Power. I was and still am addicted. I can sometimes build the alien in space, otherwise it's a war of attrition until 3000AD on Warlord. Diety mode still kicks my butt before I can use my best strategy. My strategy is to keep my head afloat until the modern era and beyond. There, the moment I score the hollywood wonder, I immediately diplomatize TV's to all other nations. I then proceed as a democracy, skip corp repub, and try to go straight for Technocracy. Enact it, then diplomatize the 'AI Entity wonder' to other nations. This I have noticed keeps the computer busy as it tends to work against itself more often, particularly if the Entity 'glitches' up and makes barbarian nations.
They can attack all the cities they want as at this point as my space ladder should be or nearly built around this point in time.

Since I missed civ 3, I am definatly looking forward to Civ 4.
Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 is my recurring addiction atm.

Believe me, Conquest is better. Much better. Same random map, but the scenarios are by far the best of any game I've ever played. They trump everything else.
