Actually, we don't. Like most primates, we rely on vision for most of our sensory input. So visual cues about individuality make the most sense. We
also have individual body odor and voices
Other animals also have different faces and voices.
Why do we need to recognize each other? Well, breeding would be really awkward if we couldn't tell each other apart, for starters!
And, er... I dunno about you, but I lack the "natural" instincts to rape and murder...
