Russia says U.S may use satellite blast as weapon test

news.yahoo.com

Russia's Defence Ministry said on Saturday a U.S. plan to shoot down an ailing spy satellite could be used as a cover to test a new space weapon.

The ministry said there was insufficient proof that Washington's decision to fire a missile at the disabled satellite was to prevent a potentially deadly leak of toxic gas as it re-entered Earth's atmosphere.

"In our opinion, the decision to destroy the U.S. satellite is not as harmless as it is being presented. Especially as the United States has been avoiding talks on restricting a space arms race for quite a long time," the ministry's information department said in a statement.

More saber rattling that sounds like it is from 30 years ago, but do Russia have a point?

Could this satellite have been intentionally disabled to create a test for a new space-based weapon platform?

Some would have us believe that there are already weapons in space, but i'm inclined to believe that if they take this thing down with a space-based weapon, then it is only a new development.

There are several threads on this one, but they are NOT using a space based weapon to shoot it down. They're using the highly successful SM-3 launched from the Aegis cruiser USS Lake Eerie to shoot it down.

Considering this is ATS, i take anything in 'official' explanations with a grain of salt.

Sure, they may fire a missle from the cruiser into the sky to suit a cover story, but who's to say that some other form of weapon they are testing doesn't take out both the satellite AND missle?

Oh, and i started a new thread because of the fresh accusations from Russia. They haven't been mentioned in the other topics, so it is technically breaking news.

So because it comes from an official source it's automatically suspect? What's the point of wasting all that money on the three SM-3s they prepared to launch, as well as the fuel for the ships, and everything else involved. Why not say that it entered the atmosphere earlier than expected and blew up? Why even tell anyone that they are launching a missile if it's a big lie?
