Astronomers find galaxy far, far away

www.usatoday.com

Astronomers have glimpsed what may be the farthest galaxy we've ever seen, providing a picture of a baby galaxy born soon after the beginning of the universe.

Images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope have revealed the galaxy at almost 13 billion light-years away, making it the strongest candidate for the most distant galaxy ever seen, said European Southern Observatory astronomer Piero Rosati, who helped make the discovery.

Since the galaxy is so far away, its light took ages to reach us, so what we see now is a snapshot of how this galaxy looked 13 billion years ago.

Imagine the evolutionary progress over that period of time.

Kinda useless, if I believed in the big bang it would be something. I don't. It's cool that we're looking out there, beautiful things to see.

I find it hard to imagine a galaxy formed in 2 billion years... but hey... when did the big bang happen? *scratches head*

Funny how they say it happened at "this" date... with no proof.

Ignorantly interesting to say the least.

But, cool stuff nonetheless, always enjoy yhe pictures of eternity's beauty.

Yes I love all these new stuff.

I agree that it's kind of odd when they state things as if they know everything, when obviously they don't lol

My initial question was how can they know when the big bang happened if it takes so long for the evidence to arrive, light evidence that continues to get older, and technology that gets better.
I understand now, they use double negatives!

They are still trying to decipher this strange message scrolling through space.

Great first post
Very interesting.

How can the Universe ITSELF be 13.5 Billion years old if the light from the galaxy took 13 Billion years just to reach here? Something isn't adding up. It's looking like it's going to be about time to adjust their age estimates, yet again...

Frustrated, this padawan really is...

Hmm ... are we going to see evidence of The Force or The Schwartz?

I agree with above.

What happens when technology starts allowing us to see even greater distances. Hubble isn't the ultimate in possibilities. So, what kind of theories will they claim as facts if they could see a supposed trillion light years out?

It seems the requirements for theories and the scrutinizing of theories is not quite equal ... though it does seem things are starting to come around a bit with some more open minds in the public eye.

Here is a link to some details that might help.
www.physorg.com...
There is a considerable range in age of the universe theories.

And they are "theories".

Cool, now they found a galaxy far, far away...

BTW, did they see Darth Vader cruising around in the Deathstar, by any chance?

While they use the force, we still use the telescope... to discover things that are yet to come (due to the theories of speed of light in space).
