This amazing photograph gives whole new meaning to the phrase "May God strike me with lightning if ..."

Rio de Janeiro's world famous statue of Christ the Redeemer was struck by lightning during a thunderstorm over the Brazilian city on Sunday.

I would have liked to see that first hand. Who photographed it? Or maybe it was a security camera.

Being such a high point you would think this kind of thing happens pretty frequently though, wouldn't you ?

The statue is 130ft tall, is made of 700 tons of reinforced concrete and stands atop the 2,296ft Corcovado mountain overlooking the city.


I don't know how much concrete attracts lightning, or if "reinforced" means there is steal in it, but you wouldn't want to be hanging around that 2,296ft pillar of Jesus in a thunder storm. How ironic.

Reinforced concrete indeed does have steel in it and you would be amazed how shallow that steel is to the surface of the structure.

In order to make a statue like this one they probably had to create a silhouette of Jesus. and then pour and shape the concrete around the steel.

So it is quite probable that this statue gets hit hard by lightning often as it is a high point and probably quite conductive.

Why would a security camera be train on Jesus? In case someone steals it?
