Greetings
A little about myself, I graduated college, 1993, Electronic Engineering Technician, which after 11 years it accounts for nothing. Graduated college again in 2002, Business Administration (Accounting), which only goes to say I am capable of learning.

Researching ancient writings and the sciences since mid 2000 while raising three beautiful children. Research funding would be a great asset but that is a whole other story.
Originally from Ontario, Canada, the kids and I spent not quite 2 years on the farthest east coast, now on the furthermost west coast.
I have a brother in Tacoma, Washington; he has been deep into research for well over 30 years now.

Ha Ha, we have a lot in common. I also did EET years ago and worked nearly 9 years with Canadian Pacific as signals and communications tech. Then I quit and went to university to study administration. Presently I am an accountant and it has been up and down over the years here in Toronto.

Where are you on Vancouver Island? Quite a difference on each coast eh? (I have seen both of them).

Welcome and you will find a wide variety of characters around here. There is maybe a couple dozen of regulars. So enjoy your stay and may your learning be large!

Welcome Ice. You'll have fun here. I'm from N.S., but lived on Van. Isl. for six yr.s. Hope you're enjoying their winter.

I spent 2 winters on the island (Newfoundland), it happened to be their record worse winters. I refuse to buy a snow shovel ever again.
There is no comparison between the east coast (snow) and the west coast; I will not elaborate so as to not cause a rush of people to the west coast.
I am on Vancouver Island just west of Victoria, over looking a bay, the spit and a view of Olympic Peninsula.

How could you trade the west coast for Toronto or NS?

The island is very laid back I found. Victoria is a very pretty city and has a comfortable smugness about it. Yeah the island is a good place to be. Do you feel in anyway isolated there? Did they clear up all the problems with the ferry services in BC?

I would trade Toronto for N.S. in a second. It's home. I acually miss the Atlantic. When I get out of the airport I can smell it 20 miles inland where I coulpn't even smell it before. Victoria is a beautiful city, how do you like the view of the coastal mountains? I would visit, but I would live there, it's not home.

As for the smugness in Victoria, I dont know about that, I keep to the smaller towns, not crowded, not so busy and less or no pier pressure for kids.
Isolated? I find doing extensive research is more isolating than locale.
The kids and I drove west at the same time as the G7 or G8 meeting was in Alberta. We were fortunate to meet a couple groups of special equipped enforcement troops at a Tim Hortons; they arrived in their very nice total black van.
The mountains were beautiful, not the steep drive I had imagined.
