Anchorage police start charging for repeat visits.

ANCHORAGE - Anchorage police have begun sending bills to people if officers have to make more than eight trips per year to their homes.

The first homeowner to be billed under a law that allows police to charge people got a tab for $23,000 last week.

I first heard about through a law enforcement forum I'm on but it was before the Anchorage police started enforcing the new law. I'm not saying that the City of Anchorage isn't justified but I see a lot of people lose their homes and filing bankruptcy if the courts uphold all of these citations. I'm not trying to be paranoid but it's another interesting way the, city government in this instance, can take confiscate your property.

Wow. Thats all I have to say. They are going to charge extra for what we already pay them. Taking away from their donut eating time?

Keep in mind, it's not the police that initiated the charge, it's the city of Anchorage. To reimburse the cost of the police...which I find a little pricey but I don't have all the facts.

Mike Evans made a comment in a recent News Target article that he thought between the years 2009 and 2012 there will be an increased number of bankruptcies...which is not surprising but the surprising thing is he claims cities will be filing bankruptcy. Perhaps Anchorage sees the writing on the wall.

Where I live, the city used to charge a fee if a police officer had to make so many trips to your house because your alarm went off and it was due to the wind or some other non criminal related reason. A lot of people complained but even more took steps to eliminate the possibility of getting fined...instead of audible alarms (which seem to go off every time the wind blows) they went to silent and enrolled in a security program. The number of calls was so greatly reduced the city did away with the fines.

Anchorage sounds a little excessive but I guess we'll see if it works.
