The placement of our troops and the coming invasion of Iran

In an article this morning on CCN (Article) US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates states that he is willing to send US troops to Pakistan should there be any need for assistance in training.

I'm sure that many of us are as of late, familiar with a middle easter map.

As you notice, if the US does send troops to Pakistan, Iran is surrounded by US troops on both of its East and West sides in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Now with the Persian gulf to the South and the Caspian to the North, Iran looks almost completely surrounded.

Now I'm not so sure that I believe that this is a coincidence. I would bet my life that the US miltary comanders saw this in advanced or at least planned this strategy.

I can in no way predict this invasion, but if something hits the fan and an invasion or war is immenent, I'd say that the US would be in prime shape.

IMO that is.

yes, i most certainly see this "not so coincidence". A good strategic move. imo, when one prepares to go into battle, they should know to go in with a plan, with right and proven weaponry and they better know their adversary.

well if that was the plan then it wasnt a very good one for a civilian to figure it out (assuming you are one), but then again there is nothing Iran can do about it, its funny how the war on terrorism, has turned into a totally different war

Well, actually I am a former US Marine. But that still doesn't mean much because If I were still in, top brass doesn't discuss such maters openly and it would have been on a need to know basis.

Maybe I am too long displaced from the U.S. military. But it seems we don't have enough troops to deal with Iraq and Afghanistan, let alone more populated countires such as Iran or Pakistan. Nukes seem to be the only option to me. This just seems to be irrational to me.

There are already US Black Ops in Pakistan, so you can bet we'll have regular troops on the ground before the next election. The only problem with that right now is politics. What will it take to justify opening a new front in the "war on terror"?
