Wow. So, will it be visible to the naked eye? I do not know what all of that info means. I'm sure someone around here does...

That's a little bit better.
Thanks.

An object of magnitude 10 will not be visible to the naked eye. 6.5 is about the norm for objects in a dark area, and 3 for somewhere with light pollution. Obviously, the lower the number the brighter the object, for example: Mars is -3, the moon is -12, and the sun -27.

BadAstronomy.com has a pretty solid reputation as far as I know, and Phil makes several valid points. Thank you for linking to this blog.

Being a survivalist, I'm still intent on making sure my family is prepared to weather the storm, so to speak, but since we're pretty much prepared 24/7, that's not going to involve a lot of changes to our routine or inventory. I figure if an asteroid passes Earth and doesn't cause so much as a single dropped call, then I ended up on the winning side. If for some reason it shifts direction enough to impact Earth, then we'll be ready.

Goldstone DSS-14 will be offline for maintenance from Jan. 25-Feb. 15.

I have bolded Jan 28... correct me if im wrong but 0.004 is really close isnt it?

oh and for the astronomers going on holiday read just above. the DDS-14 will be down for "maintinance" over the time it passes... how convienient...

heres the link to that page again. Saves running through all the posts to find it.

Removed Google Page by Nasa

Strange they skipped the 29th

Isnt that when it is suppose to be at its closest? Also notice on the 27th its .008 and the 28th its .004 so what will it be at 29th? .000?

I personally don't think anything will happen. However, I do concede a couple things that are very odd...

Yahoo's actions in deleting the message board thread is very strange.

The NASA hourly animation appears to "freeze," with no change in the object distance, for six hours at the moment it passes through the plane of the Earth orbit.

Other tidbits of missing NASA data and offline equipment.

All in all... this may be nothing... but there's enough oddities to inspire many to think there might be something.

here is something to that I found on one of the forums I go to the lady was searching everywheres and found this:

Quote from interesting site:
"Asteroid "2007 TU24" possible interference with Earth ~January 29, 2008
Picking up interesting dialog regarding TU 24 Asteroid. It will have its nearest pass on January 29, 2008.
It is 400 meters, and will pass within 0.0045 AUs from earth.
This is very very close as these things go.
Any input? Would it disrupt tides? Or anything else.
There is some talk about a collision with earth, but ...... these threads seem to go overboard about reality.....

2007 TU24 was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey (Arizona) on October 11, 2007.
This object's 1.4-lunar-distance approach on Jan. 29 is the closest for any
known Potentially Hazardous Asteroid until 2027.
ADDITIONAL ASTROMETRY IS STILL DESIRABLE FOR THIS OBJECT

Apart from its absolute visual magnitude (H = 20.1, implying a
diameter ~0.3 km if it has a typical S-class albedo), nothing is known
about TU24's physical properties, but the expected echo
signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) almost certainly will suffice for
high-resolution imaging using Arecibo or Goldstone.

Goldstone observations are scheduled on January 23 and Arecibo observations are
scheduled on January 27-28 and February 1-4. Note that Goldstone observations straddle
the January 23-24 date boundary.

This object will brighten to about 11th magnitude in late January
when it will be a target for photometric and spectroscopic observations."

*******************************

The strange thing though that I am not getting here is how can it go down .004 every day then they dont show the 29th then on the 30th it shows it back up to .007 ????? and it gains 5 every day there after?

hmmmm typical i play a DNB gig in sydney that weekend :O but on a serious note isn't it a bit weird about the site bieng down over those periods ??? and the missing data for the 30 - 31st ..... i think i may be keeping an eye to the sky over the coming week or so just incase ???

Looks like we should all head over to Tom Cruises bunker if were going to survive this possibly...

I think all this adds up to is the fact that they really don't know what is going to happen, and they don't want to admit how close it will be with their lack of understanding of the situation.

I'm sure its not going to hit but who knows how it will affect us in other ways.

I am completely new to ATS but, have been reading for quite awhile. I can assure you that I have read every post in this thread before jumping in here. First I read with interest....then with concern...and now...why is the 29th missing in the data? There are just to many problems with the information available on this. And just what is 2007 TU24 bouncing off of....because it sure looks like us. Out of every thread I have followed on this board...this one is by far.....the most concerning to me. It's time for some serious questions to the powers that be. There should be something about this in the media. Thank you to all the posters here for all the amazing information that you continue to supply. And Hilda....I second your questions.

Peace.

Well, first off let me say that i have not read every post of this thread but and sorry if what iam about to add has already been said but..

What if, they want to leave people guessing as to weather the asteroid will hit but they know themselves that it will not and on the 28th/29th they wipe out some of the population with a catastrophic exoplsion or somthing along those lines and then just say it was the asteroid?

And yes as i type this i out i relise how insane it sounds but hey..might aswell put it out there

This thing is about 673,191 Km from earth ..

the moon is 385,000Km so it is almost twice as far away and will miss us by 2/3 of a million miles. still a little close for comfort but not that scary.

Respectfully,
GEO

Nothing big and bad will happen.
It will end up being nothing more than a footnote in astronomy books.

If by some chance, it hits and kills all of us, you can tell me I was wrong.

Still no news coverage atleast for 10 secs?
An Asteroid will pass over earth, keep your eyes to the skies on the 29th..
thats all... to keep all the telescopes to the sky? Big GoldStone asteroid sounds nice over all the pointless Celebrity news...

Is that going by the 0.004 on the 28th? because if it is then it will be closer then that on the 29th. because it has been going down 0.004 every single day. NASA shows it so they cant be wrong right?
