An even beter idea to actually know what your shoting at.
His fault for firing a shot at a dark figure.

When I hear stories like this one I’m more tempted to say that the spouse did know who was on the other side of the gun and this happened to make for an easy explanation. Though I might be wrong but it seems easy to say you thought your spouse/significant other was an intruder or trespasser.

This might just be my dark look at humanity in general.

But if he truly did make this mistake I feel sorry for his wife for his stupidity. Never shoot unless you know what your pointing the weapon at. Common sense can save many lives.
