Don't know if this has been discussed, but U.S. Representative Charles Rangel (D-NY) has put forth a resolution (10Jan07) in the house for two years of mandatory conscription of all residents in the United States aged between 18 and 42 "as a member of the uniformed services or in civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security". Time to start getting letters to my representative ready.

Upon further research into representative Rangel, he has a poor record of his sponsored bills coming out of committee:

"Charles Rangel has sponsored 305 bills since Jan 7, 1997, of which 263 haven't made it out of committee (Very Poor) and 11 were successfully enacted (Good, relative to peers)."

The bills co-sponsors are Yvette Clarke (D-NY) and James McDermott (D-WA).

"Yvette Clarke has sponsored 3 bills since Jan 4, 2007, of which 3 haven't made it out of committee (Average) and 0 were successfully enacted (Average, relative to peers)."

"James McDermott has sponsored 104 bills since Jan 7, 1997, of which 100 haven't made it out of committee (Average) and 1 were successfully enacted (Average, relative to peers)."

But with this being a democrat sponsored bill who knows what could happen. Definitely a bill to keep a watch on.
