wife let me move my fish tank into the living room.....anyone else have tanks

finally. i have my pent tank in 'my' room but after me constantly bugging she finally gave in. she did think think that the corner of our living room did need something to fill it and the tank is perfect for it.

it looks fantastic in the living room. i got it all dialed in last night. my water is perfect. fish look fantastic.

i have a pictus cat
a clown loach
a common pleco
a flowerhorn
a parachromis managuense
an oscar
-----------

it really ties the room together[/lebowski]

how could i forget my convict and my raphiel cat?

i will be heading to the fish store at 9am and grab up a few more male convicts. now that the tank is in the living room, i need to put some more stock in that mofo.

it will be over stocked but i am the cichlid maestro so it won't be a problem.

i am thinking of getting a 9 gallon nano salt tank. they have em for $120 and that is the tank, stand, hood, light, and protein skimmer.
i might grab that up and get a couple of pounds of life rock and put a few antheas in there and maybe a seahorse.....

but then again, i want another tattoo.

Ive got a tank in the family room but all ive got in it is a turtle. Hes pretty cool though, he freaks the dog out when i let him out for a walk.

I am looking at a house to buy that has a built in one in the family room. If all goes well I will need some advice...Welllll...ALOT of advice

Thanks....I will need help. I think that tropical is the way I will go. Dont have the time for a salt water tank right now....

I have a small tank for my boy, and like Mojo we have turtles!

The first 4 - died...

The next 4 - 2 died...

So we got 2 more, back up to 4 and 1 died...

So 4 is a really bad number, don't ever get 4 turtles!!

They're Red Eared Sliders and they are quite responsive, pavlov (spl) should have used turtles!!

what kind of snails? apple snails?
those are about the only kind that people want to have....they are about the size of a quarter. the small ones are a nuisence though man...hard to get rid of them. a lot of people come across those by accident. they buy a fish or a live plant and there is a few in there and then bam, uncontrolled snails. they are Asexual so.....

if you do have a small snail infestation or get one, loaches love to eat them some snails. a yoyo loach, clown loach, or a horace loach would work fine.

about the pleco...is it a common pleco? if so, they are good at taking care of the algae when they are 'smaller'(they get huge) but as they get bigger, they actually toss out more waste....
there are a couple of other varieties you might want to scope out....
the bristlenose pleco is my favorite.
those guys are algae eating machines.

as for salt, try your hand at a nano tank to get your feet wet with it. i have been tossing the idea around.
a shop round here has 9 gallon nano setups for $120
you get the tank, stand, hood, light, and protein skimmer....thats a helluva deal.
put in a bit of live rock and 3-4 small fish and bam....

i have never set one up at home but i have maintained them at stores i have worked in.
they are not as hard as people think but my issue is the cost.

you have to put a gang of salt in when you do water changes and that adds up. you don't want to take water out of the tap so you have to go R/O or distilled water and then there is the fish.
you might want to get a nice yellow tang but they are $30.
what if it dies?

with cichlids, the most you'd be out is like a 10 spot.

my brother in law is actually coming over here shortly and we are going to be looking on the net at different plans for home build tanks.....i want a 350-400 gallon tank.

wood on the back, bottom, and sides with acrylic or thick glass on the front and i can put a couple huge tank busters in there.

i'd like to get a mating pair of dovii and toss in there...

i would really like a snakehead but they are illegal so you can't really get your hands on em.
it would be in the basement of course.

i just brought home an ocellatus(tiger oscar) and he is getting his ass beat by my jag that is about 1/3 his size.

i am not really an oscar fan but i needed another fish since i moved it in the living room. i wanted more action and after about a day of whooping on the oscar, the jag will stop and there will be peace again.

My tank is in the family room. I used the "It's educational for our son" thing. My son is fascinated by the corals and crabs.

I can't remember what kind of snails they are, but I believe you are correct. I don't have a problem with a snail infestation as I keep watching for eggs. The snails I have lay their eggs out of the water. My pleco is a common pleco that I've been thinking about taking to a pet store cause it's about 12 inches long. No doubt about the waste though. Always has a "trail" behind it!

I might get a small reef tank, it's the initial cost that scares me though. But I have heard they are easier to keep once they are set up properly.

it's setup and running fine. i had it in my room but my wife finally said i could move it into the living room as we had an empty corner and it is a pent tank.

we moved it last night but i have several buckets so it was basically a 50% water change. i took out all the fish except for the pictus cat cause his barbs get stuck in the net

when i say infestation i mean infestation....these would be very small..
maybe think of a sugar cube cut into 4 pieces and each snail would be that size and you would have HUNDREDS of them in your tank....

once the pleco's get that size they are no good imo. i have a common pleco now but i will be getting rid of him as soon as i get a bristlenose...they didn't have any and i like to have an algae eater in the tank straight away...you'd be suprised how fast algae can grow...even if we can't see it, it's there.

pleco's are cool cause they have what is called an 'omega iris'...they flip it down during the day to block out light and at night, they roll it back so they can get to work. they do most of their work at night.

wise choice....those stores run their tanks on a 'central system'...

so let me talk freshwater cause they all sell fresh but not all sell marine.

one of the tanks gets ick. that water is pumped through all the tanks cause they are connected to the same filter system in the back. they go to medicate the tank and drop in whatever chemical is their fav to use. now that chemical is running through all the tanks....

same deal for salt. they're ALL on a central deal at the chain stores like that....

i will buy from them but only cause i know what i am doing, the tropical fish are cheap and i will go there for 3-4-5 days in a row and observe the tank i want a fish from and all the other tanks as well.
if in that time i see something i do not like, then i don't buy.

i got my managuense from pets mart and he is rad as hell. great color. growth is good. not sick and from what i can tell never was.

I have an evil fish, its a fresh water (can survive in bracksih too) puffer...

i think tetraodon means he has 4 teeth? but its more like an evil beak i am scared to put my hand into the tank, originally he belonged to my good friend who is studying to be a marine biologist, he just didnt have room to take him and his tank when he moved. (he's got more tanks than i have fingers)


he is suppose to be an ambush predator but I dont keep sand in the tank and the pebbles arent high enough for him to hide instead he floats around like a helicopter heh...

I heard they just now where able to get them to breed in captivity, something like a 20k gallon tank, 1 male and a couple females.

How these things are able to survive in the wild I have no idea, they are so territorial and will kill eachother

and boy do they get HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you'd love my friend clint, he has 2 reef tanks one is 150gallon i believe and he has a massive 500 gallon in the garage, and he has mangroves growing in the garage too into ponds
