Dog Heads

I ran across the story of the Dog Headed Saint.

One thing to keep in mind when discussing saints is that the Catholic church realized that they had to include some level of local lore and mythos in order to get the "heathens" to convert.

it was a concession. I would think that the Dog Headed Saint falls in that category. It doesn't make it any less important, just changes the perspective a little.

It's St Christopher? Patron Saint of Travellers?

Could be super appropriate.

Or just some more hallucinatory organised religion stuff.

People mostly think of wolves attacking sheep but packs of dogs are common attackers as well, especially when they're the largest predator.

No source, something I read and have seen in use, on a horse farm during foaling season. To scare off wild dogs, the severed head of a captured wild dog was left on the ground at access points, used as far back as dogs have been a problem for farmers (10000+yrs?). Dogs smell them out alright, even when they're left in long grass for example.

It is interesting how, as the other poster BFT said that they incorporated existing ideas to bring in the flock.

I still can't seem to goggle many good hits on alien dog heads.

AS a lover of all things canine and wolf/dog pack behavior and psychcology, (see my avatar for the youngest of our pack),as well as a researcher of cryptids I can see a link between some bigfoot sightings and these Dog heads, some of the descriptions sound decidely more canine than primate.

I can also see how something canine-ish could easily be a higher order of life, verging on what many would consider deity. there is a depth of presence, emotion, and intuition present in wolves and real dogs (meaning ones that arent inbred to the point of ridiculousness and total loss of original form and intelligence) that seems to be lacking in other mammals including humans.

i did a google search ancient Egyptian dog and found plenty dead links and plenty of ebay links but not much else, sometimes i think google is there just to sell you something on ebay...lol. Then i did a wiki search for

Did they have you in mind when wriiting about it's temprement?

I remember Edgar Cayce speaking about the origins of human beings on Earth, and how originally humans were "thought forms" pushing themselves into material physical forms, and that originally some of these were literally half animal, half man-looking figures.

To this day in Romania there are legends of "Dog Heads", not werewolves but more like ogres with the head of a dog or at least a dog-like head with a muzzle.
