I have a couple of questions for anyone who would like to answer it… Why would NASA want to keep something like the moon having a possible atmosphere from the general public? Also, how could NASA keep a lid on something like an atmosphere on the moon when other astronomers around the world observe the moon as well? Wouldn’t one of them blow the whistle and say that the moon has an atmosphere on it?

So........would that just be me or not? Can you be able to notice planet/satellite's weather from this distance, like between earth and moon if you take a long & hard look at it, or without carefully observing?

From just my personal observations...

...When you're looking at the moon, you're looking at something a little smaller in diameter than the size of the United States from coast-to-coast. I think it would be very difficult to see clouds moving across the face of the Moon unless they were moving extremely quickly (much faster than any cloud on Earth), or unless you were observing it for an hour or so and through a high-powered telescope.

For example, in the video I've seen from the space station at only 200 miles above the Earth, it is very difficult to observe the movement of clouds (ignoring the movement of the Space station). And that's from low Earth orbit...the Moon is 230,000 miles away.

That's just my common-sense opinion, for what that's worth.

Uhm.. How could lunar atmosphere be breathable? 25000kg? 25 tons? That fits into a truck that has a tank for gas in it.

People don't really realize what kind of number we are talking about here, do they? I suppose the only way out of this is to claim that these figures are wrong.

Btw, why do we not see an atmopshere on the moon whenever lunar eclipse occurs? Physics is wrong again, right?

Let me ammend my post by saying that I DO NOT believe clouds can exist on the Moon...I'm just saying that the OP couldn't have seen them even if they did.

It must have been an optical illusion, or maybe he was seeing some atmospheric disturbance in the Earth's atmosphere. There could have been very high thin clouds that were not visible in the night sky until they moved in front of the very bright Moon.

NAZA spent 20 billion dollars of the public's money convincing the public through the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo Programs that our moon has no breathable atmosphere and has one sixth the gravity of Earth. It is not likely that they would ever turn around and say, "Oh by the way, the Moon has a breathable atmosphere and people live up there."

Its a secret and it will remain a secret. Knowledge is only available to those who seek it.

Also, how could NASA keep a lid on something like an atmosphere on the moon when other astronomers around the world observe the moon as well?

There are a few astronomers who know the truth but they keep their mouths shut because like everybody else they gotta eat. And they are not going to keep any job if they go around talking about the atmosphere on the moon or people who live there.

Many Astronomers/Scientists/Mathematicians have talked about the atmosphere on the moon among them:

(In no particular order)
William Herschel
Mestrius Plutarchus
Nicolaus Copernicus
Aristarchus of Samos
John Wilkens
Hans Kepler
Peter Andreas Hansen
William Leitch
John Herschel
William Whewell
Asaph Hall
Mikhail Vasin
Alexander Shcherbakov
V.A. Firsoff

Wouldn’t one of them blow the whistle and say that the moon has an atmosphere on it?

It's very hard to prove to people who haven't been there. For one thing the atmosphere on the Moon is very thin probably only several thousand feet thick. Neither is the atmosphere on the Moon contaminated like ours. So trying to view it's atmosphere with the occultation of stars is very difficult.

A lot of people spent a lot of time making sure that the atmosphere on the moon and the people who live there do so in secret.

The truth is out there for those who want to know it.

But most are perfectly happy with the information that NAZA has spread before them and simply can't be bothered with the truth.

Thanks for the input rawsom. You are quoting NAZA supplied information. In fact the Moon, our Moon, has a breathable atmosphere as does Mars and Venus.

Yes, NAZA's figure are flat out wrong. There is a breathable atmosphere on our Moon, Mars and Venus. People, just like us live on all of those places.

The Moon's atmosphere is not contaminated like ours and also, although breathable, is is not very thick, maybe only a few thousand feet if that. It would be extremely difficult if not impossible to discern an atmopshere during a lunar eclipse. Same thing with occultations.

As I have mentioned before a lot of people went to a lot of trouble to make sure we never suspected people lived up there so it's not likely a secret that is going to be let out anytime soon.

The the truth is out there for those who wish to know it. Not many people do. Nor are they willing to pay its price. :

How much magnification and how big a mirror to collect light do you think we need? I have had the impression (and yes, some knowledge about this) that even amateurs have telescopes that are powerful enough to detect a distortion of background stars against an atmosphere, that is >200 meters in thickness. Those are Dobson type telescopes that many amateurs have.

Eclipses with the sun are useful in this, as it is possible to detect bending of light at the moment moon's opposite direction (compared to direction it is crossing our sun) comes to a right place. I know that what is seen first is a flash of light but that's because it takes some time for our eyes to adjust, and that applies to equipment as well. Still, there's a timecap large enough to do this.

I have to agree. It would seem that strong data would have emerged if an atmosphere were present on Luna. It would be a monumental task to try and shush every astronomer. There would be hundreds, even thousands, of reports with hard data.

I could see NASA "bending" the truth about a further object from Earth, such as Mars or Venus, but the Moon is just too in your face for that to work.

Now, as a side note: There are some gravity anomalies about the Moon. By a long stretch of the imagination, one might make a case for localized conditions where a gravity well existed, for some as yet undiscovered reason, that might hold some small area of atmosphere.

But even that would require a great leap of logic. IMO.

Hi TheoOne,

It is possible you may observed the rare phenomena of Transient Lunar Phenomena or TLP. TLP manifests itself in the form of glows, clouds, colourations and brightenings of certain crater walls, in particular the craters Aristarchus and Kepler. We currently believe that TLP is the result of volcanic gases trapped bellow the Lunar surface, being vented.

See:
TLP

There is indeed a slight atmosphere on the Moon, but despite the fanciful and ludicrous claims of some people, it is not substantial. If a dense atmosphere existed on the Moon, the surface would not appear as sharp as it does in the telescope-the mountains and crater walls would be blurred by the movement of air. Moreover, Photographs and CCD images of craters taken a few years ago would show erosion on the crater walls: This is not the case, the crater walls and shapes remain unchanged.

I don't normally respond to the die hard conspiracy theorists and the like since they are very unlikely to take on board anything you say. Anyhow...

This is simply wrong. The atmosphere of Mars is a very thin tenuous Carbon Dioxide atmosphere, and Venus has a very thick poisonous atmosphere- but you don't have to take NASA/ESA/INSERT YOUR AGENCY HERE, just do what many undergraduates on a physics degree do, go to a telescope, point it at Mars or Venus and with the use of a spectrometer analyse see what's there. If you care to look at Venus in the infra red, you will see how hot it is.

Yes, NAZA's figure are flat out wrong. There is a breathable atmosphere on our Moon, Mars and Venus. People, just like us live on all of those places.

Great claims, some evidence?

Oh dear! We're juggling several miscomprehensions and poorly understood ideas all at once! It doesn't matter how badly polluted the atmosphere is, it is the gasses that bend and distort the light Pollution or not)!! Mountain edges for example in the Mare Orientale would not be crisp and sharp, and starlight would be scattered during grazings and occultations.

In the case of a total eclipse, the diamond ring would not be sharp but blurred and distorted, moreover we would see a Halo effect around the moon as the gases were illuminated by the sun. Indeed, this was how it was shown that Venus had a very thick atmosphere: when Venus passes in front of the Sun, it is surrounded by a thick halo- this is the atmosphere illuminated by the sun.

As I have mentioned before a lot of people went to a lot of trouble to make sure we never suspected people lived up there so it's not likely a secret that is going to be let out anytime soon.

Classic! The stuff that conspiracy theories are made of. "The Authorities", damn them, are hiding the truth! I love it...

Truth seems to be a very flexible term on this forum and can mean just about anything you want it to mean!
