A Geologists advice please! Hawaiian ridge Idea

A question for you geologists out there. I have been searching the web for some info on the Hawaiian ridge that extends to and it seems well past the midway island to the bering strait. I first noticed this on google earth and after a cursory look at other seabed ranges I found the hawaiian ridge is by far the longest and the only one it seems with a near 90deg bend.
This I find intrigueing.
I assume that some anomaly is acting like a steam trains smoke if you will, sending up "puffs" at regular intervals and leaving a trail of volcanoes, hence the ridge. Hawaii being the newest.
Whether the crust is moving or the anomaly or the core would be interesting to know.
And finally if the ridge does "bend" as it seems toward the bering strait could this bend be an indicator of some past impact event?
Is it possible to guess at the age the bend might have happenned, obviously many many millions of years ago.
Does this tie in with any other known geologic/meteoric events?
Or is my curious mind extrapolating too much?

Just curious but do you have access to any more detailed topographic maps of the area that show detailed contour lines of the area in question? If so, could you post them?

The Hawaii-Emperor Seamount chain is formed by the movement of the Pacific Plate over a 'hot spot' in the earth's crust. The puffing analogy is quite good by the way

The 'kink' in the chain dates to about 43 million years ago.

btw the chain comprehensively disproved the old idea of 'earth crust displacement' once proposed by Charles Hapgood and still brought up from time to time by others

great now I know the real name I can go a bit more indepth but the stuff from NG is pretty recent, again thanks.
So still I wonder if there are any "exterior forces" about the time of the bend, poleshift etc but I will search on!

This has had me interested for a while, I was hoping the mechanism was a meteorite impact wobbling the crust relative to the core, that sort of thing.
Tie it in with a known crater or perhaps get some math genius to work out the angle difference of the earth to allow the direction change, hmm that doesnt sound clear, imagine a giant billiards game might be easier!

As for the images they have to be hosted on another site first, I use photobucket, free
(Well I was born in Scotland and some sterotypes ring true!)
then once uploaded there they provide a line of code for direct linking
which is provided under the pic looks like this (I put spaces in the htt part so you could see the code)

closest i could find is this topo map from satellite imaging, nice colours but not fantastic detail.

The "anomaly" causing all the volcanoes is a sort of hole in the crust of the earth, which allows magma to flow up from the layer below the crust. However, the "hole" is being moved as the "plate" it sits on gets shoved north, so eventually the magma burns through to the surface, creating a new volcano. I don't know if all of that is right, but I do know that the crust is moving, but so is the "hole".

And I don't know when the ridge changed direction, but it presumably would have altered course because something gave it a shove in its new direction. An impact could have had that effect.

Although I suppose it would be possible to find out when the ridge bent, I don't know when it bent, or why.

The info i have so far is that the bend happened about 50 million years ago and may have taken 8 million years to settle into its new direction.
Yes both the plate and the anomaly are moving but my geologist friends have suggested it could be a massive impact event, it is about when the dinos got wasted, there is an earthquake symptom called "liquefaction" where if the ground shakes long and strong enough the once solid earth acts like a liquid, but this is localised around the quake zone.

The earths crust sits on a liquid mass so it might be moveable given a massive enough external force, shifting the whole crust about the core.
Some ideas we are looking at is that a massive impact could have done this (someone is running the numbers through their facilities computer in down time and will get back to me in a week)
This brings us to a few other ideas that this could be a source of part of the earths wobble, may have sped up its rotation and changed the level of gravity, quite a few more interesting things. but I will wait until the geo guy gets back to me
