This song remiends me of a very personal, emotional trauma that I had to deal with in one of my marriages while I was batteling alcohol and drug
addictions. Everytime I hear this song on FM, it brings back painful memories that there is no excaping from. A part of my life that damn near
destroyed me. I'm much better now!!!
I had the privelage of seeing Boston (back in the late 80's/early 90's?) at the 'Kingswood Theater' in Canada's Wonderland. (Saw Stevie Nix of
Fleetwood Mac; played that night as well)
The lead singer (R.I.P.) played 'More than a feeling', and when it came to the 'high notes' in the song, he pointed across the stage to his son,
and sonny boy took over. WOWWW... his son could hit the high notes without batting an eyelash!
Honestly..I can put a song to almost everything my life.Right from the time I was a wee lass to now.I still do it.I could list hundreds of songs.
I have ones that remind me of my childhood, my parents, my friends, my high school party nights, cruising with the guys in their old beater cars,
boyfriends, summer days at the beach, concerts I've been to.Wow! I wouldn't know where to start or finish.Hmmm, let me think.
First thought in my head...
First serious boyfriend. A punker, with spike hair and piercings everywhere. He was the DJ at the rollerskating rink.circa 1984.
We all loved this one.
This one is me missing my Motorcycle.Gotta get me a new one.
Man, that baby had a kick ass stereo, and she was electric blue.
Babes, I'm on beer #6..feeling NO pain..and you just completely cracked me up....
ROFLMAO..OMG!
OK..I need tunes..gotta get some tunes..back in a flash..ZZZZZOOOOMMMM!!!!
Ok, the first time my oldest child giggled as a baby..I was dancing around the room with him, he was 5 months old,and I was air guitaring on his
tummy..he laughed right out loud for the first time, over and over...
TOO CUTE!
First Love
For the nights spent on the streets of Toronto when I was 14
Pregnant at 15, this song helped me to keep my son
(taking inventory of my beer...hmmmm...yeahhhhhhhh...ok....I'm about 2 ahead of AD now...what the hell...ok...here's another one
oh God help me...
Fairwell to Nova Scotia (the sea-bound coast) by The Real Mckenzies
Words to song:
the sun was setting in the West
the birds were singing in every tree
all nature seemed inclined for to rest
but still there was no rest for me.
i grieve to leave my native land
and i grieve to leave my comrades all
and my parents whom i hold so dear
and the bonnie, bonnie lass that i do adore.
farewell to Nova Scotia, you sea-bound coast
let your mountains dark and dreary be
for when i am far away on the briny ocean tossed
will you ever heave a sigh and a wish for me?
[ Lyrics found at www.mp3lyrics.org/PCRN ]
the drums they do beat and the wars to alarm
the captain cries, and we must obey
so farewell, farewell to Nova Scotia's charms
for it's early in the mornin' and i'm far, far away
farewell to Nova Scotia, you sea-bound coast
let your mountains dark and dreary be
for when i am far away on the briny ocean tossed
will you ever heave a sigh and a wish for me?
i have three brothers and they are at rest
their arms are crossed upon their breast
but a poor simple sailor jest like me
must be tossed and driven in the cold black sea
farewell to Nova Scotia, you sea-bound coast
let your mountains dark and dreary be
for when i am far away on the briny ocean tossed
will you ever heave a sigh and a wish for me?
When singing the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, I am reminded of my past parakeets, birds and other animals. I don't understand why this song
brings tears to my eyes. I get choked up each time I sing this song, really.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
Oh, Divine Master, grant that I may
not so much seek to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
A defining moment for me; Glastonbury's greatest moment, the largest crowd ever, my favourite band headlining and singing my favourite song.
At the time I had some very difficult life choices to make.
This song resonates with me as much today as when I first heard it.
The Levellers - One Way. (Live Glastonbury 1994)
There's only one way of life
And that's your own your own your own
My father when I was younger
Took me up on to the hill
That looks down on the city smog
And above the factory spill
He said now this is where I come
When I wanted to be free
but he never was in his lifetime
But these words stuck with me hey
And so I ran from all of this
And I climbed that highest hill
I looked down on to my life
Above the factory spill
I looked down onto my life
As the family disgrace
Then all my friends on the starting line
Their wages off to chase
Yes and all my friends and all their jobs
All the bloody waste
CHORUS
Well well when I grew up,
learned to love and laugh
Circled A's on the underpass
The noise we thought would never stop
Died a death when the punks grew up
And we choked on all our dreams
We wrestled all our fears
Running through the heartless concrete streets
Chasing our ideas Run
And all the problems of the world
Won't be solved by this guitar
And they won't stop coming either
By the life I've had so far
And the bright lights of my home town
Won't be getting any dimmer
Though their calling has receded
Like some old distant singer
And they don't look so appealing
To the eyes of this poor sinner
One of my favorite songs of all time "Camilla's Masque" by "Cradle of Filth". Reminds me of my past. Sometimes a past I wish I could forget ever
existed. But it is what it is, and I am here because of it.
The sadness associated with the song...is a feeling I wouldn't give up for the world because of the meaning of it.
A LOT of songs remind me of a certain point in time in my life. I can probably name at least one song that was playing during important or dramatic
events in my life, or represent an occurance that has happened in my past.
I have a playlist on iTunes called "The Days of My Youth: The Crazy 80s & Early 90s" which lists all the songs I can remember from my childhood
events growing up.
The song that strikes me the most as it relates to an event in my past is
Take a Picture by Filter. I was a junior in high school when the song came out on the airwaves and I used to listen to it with my first love. Whenever
I hear the song I think of the nights we spent together just laying out under the stars and thinking we were the only two people that existed on
earth. We both moved on and ended our relationship after 2 years, but hearing that song makes me feel bittersweet and brings back vivid images of our
times together.
There are to many songs out there that have a deeper or significant meaning to me.
I think a lot of the joy in listening to music is the nostalgic value of it and the memories you create and share with the people you are hearing the
music with. I can honestly say I listen to some songs strictly for the nostalgic value of it. Not to say I don't like the song, I just love the
memories that come with it.
