Yea it's disturbing.

Listen to FUGAZI and DELTRON... and MR LIF and... there's such better music out there than the pop hop that comes out of nearly every speaker I pass.

I am always very confused when someone shows me a "main stream" song, because I never reconize the artist and have never heard the song, and I always end up hating it, so, is most of this just really bad music or what.

This is nothing new. "Music Factories" like the Brill Building have been turning out formulaic songs to be song by good-looking young people and stuffed down the throats of young people who have not yet developed firm tastes since forever.

I got lucky- I didn't get a lot of new CDs, I wasn't allowed to watch MTV, and my family just didn't listen to the radio for some reason. As a result, I got a pretty wide sampling of 70s rock and 80s metal from my father and step father instead as I was growing up, and just by the odds and the gods I got introduced to people who could actually create music, and a few that couldn't, but at least knew how to put on a friggin show.

And that rock and metal I got was on cassette, even though CDs were starting to become mainstream when I was in junior high. The result- I actually listened to the whole album, just because I was too lazy to fastforward and rewind and fastforward again to find the next song. I didn't just fall in love with singles that sounded nothing like the rest of the album and run around saying I liked artists who I actually would have hated.

The great part was that every once in a while, a single from an artist I loved would REALLY catch on and I'd get to be to cool guy to all the Johnny Come Latelies. Alice Cooper's "Feed My Frankenstein" and "Lost in America" were really great for me in that respect. How people who had never heard No More Mr. Niceguy could claim to be Alice Cooper fans I'll never know, but I dubbed a few albums for them to set things right.

Anyway, long story short, CD Players and the movement of pop demographics into the tweens and teens are killing music in my opinion. When music tries to speak to the life experience of people who don't yet have any life experience, and the first 2.5 seconds of a song determine whether or not it will be listened to, this is what you get.

Bring back 8 tracks and cut your 13 year old daughter's allowance in half, and it'll be a renaissance.

Boone, to tell you the truth, I've never heard of any of the "artists" you mentioned or any of their songs.

All I listen to is Pandora

www.pandora.com...

with stuff I like. Usually Django or the Blues, some vintage R&R or Coltrane.

The contemporary music scene is indicative of American culture in general.

It's a brave new world, welcome to the monkey house.

what music trend?

thats not music at all

But if you take a look you will find that greed is everywhere around us killing lots of things

Check this article on the digital revolution

"Digital sucks...a good analogue tape recorder will blow away any digital machine", said veteran engineer Eddie Kramer (Hendrix, Traffic etc.) in a recent Audio magazine interview. "I've yet to hear a CD cut from the same source sound as good as the vinyl cut from the same source" says Rhino's Bill Inglot.

And yet they introduced the CD anyway.

And the same goes for all the majors
all in it just for the money regardless of how crappy the music has become.

Im glad that i got hooked on Electronic music over 12 years ago so it doesnt really bother me at all.

How can anyone possibly be disturbed by music trends? Is someone forcing you to listen to religious hymns? Isn't what music you listen to your choice? Doesn't the industry feed demand not the other way around? Can the industry force you to buy music that "disturbs" you? Can't you create your own music if you can't find anything that fits your style? Isn't there an Internet receptive to artists that satisfy real people's interests?

Music will never disturb me as long as I have a choice not to listen to it.

Todays top hit's list is full of the most mindless music I have ever heard. All of it talking about how you need to spend lots of money in order to be cool. You have to run up your credit bills to be cool. All of it about being cool...

All of it teaching children how to be the best consumers. I haven't listened to a public radio station since 97.1 the eagle went off the air a few years ago here in Dallas. It recently came back on but I still refuse to listen to public radio. Simply because the Rock scene isn't much different at this point.

All of my music is artists that I personally research and find for myself. Not what the radio tells me to listen to. Most of my favorite music are european bands as a matter of fact.

I used to watch Much. (A Canadian "music" station). For me, the stacks of vinyl from my parents is really an eye opener. I pick an album or two per week and really listen, sometimes there is video on the net... it's almost like a history.

Today's "music"? Corporate pocket lining... threadbare, getting thin too. You are your own DJ these days and everyone rides shotgun. They've lost the creativity war to apathy and greed and "sure-thingedness"...

There are some indie efforts, more all the time.

I think we are in yet another period like the pre-Beatles Sixties, or at the end of the Eighties just before Grunge. The popular music world has once again brought itself to the same vacuous "everything-sounds-the-same" lack of talent, no ideas mainstream pablum.

Time for another Beatles, Ramones, Nirvana--SOMEBODY--to SAVE rock and roll from itself. Again.

I choose not to listen to commercial radio or watch music channels if I ever do watch TV. That's the best way to get around influence. I do see how it affects us even though we never chose to listen to but it gets to us by other media influences(movies, commercials/advertising), people we know, etc. Hell I know rap artists, pop artists, and radio/pop rock artists by names and/or songs, generally, and I'm not even interested in those genres.

Due to record company losses during this free file sharing age, many have chosen(actually push even further now than before) to find/change artists to be clones of what does sell, or so it seems. Other factors include, an evening out of the cultural(Urban/Hip Hop) influenced fad in music, war issues dying out*, people seeking more simple forms of entertainment enjoyment instead of complex music that makes them think, and general pop culture trends overall. The majority of young people learn music through friends, or at least did in the 90s, now they go for what ever is popular/ found on a friend's Myspace.

The digital age has changed music(how it is packaged/presented), pop music needs some time to come into a new age. Before and after that look to the underground for quality, you'll always find something you like there.

*We had a few years were bands were political about the war and some say those are the best years during any era -music made during war- this time it's different.
