www.wftv.com

OCALA, Fla. -- A 10-year old Ocala girl brought her lunch to school and a small kitchen knife to cut it. She now faces a felony charge after being arrested. The school and the sheriff's office disagree on the reason for the arrest...

Once again, another case of probably innocent people getting in huge trouble for such minor things. This country never ceases to amaze me every time I look at the news headlines.

Think thats bad, a boy in wisconson was suspended for making a play gun and saying bang with his fingers, while playing at recess.

I can remember going to school in the 70's, [oops showing my age]
I always carried a small lockback knife on my persons and all in the school knew it. You would be suprised at how many of the faculty asked to use it almost on a daily basis. To me a pencil is just as deadly, heck I can now probably do as much damage with a rolled up magazine. Unfortunately I am now having to teach my children improvised defense with what is at hand. I didn't need any defensive course when I went to school. What we really need is better discipline in the schools not punishment for simple offenses. This really burns me up. It is now a felony just to pick up my child without taking off my leatherman because I just got off from work. While our children are being taught tolerance. Tolerance is just another name for complacency in my book. I'm very sorry for the rant.

I'll show my age even worse than you did. I grew up in a very rural area where hunting was a way of survival, as we ate whatever we shot. Many times us boys took an old shotgun or .22 with us to school, which were put in the cloak room till school let out. Then, we hunted on the way home.

But life was a lot simpler back then.

On topic, I think this is another case of no common sense. I once seen a guy get a fork used on him, and it was nasty. I suppose the next move is only plastic sporks at school.

You can stab somebody just as well with a plastic fork. Even a spork you can snap the handle off and use that to cut and stab.

I think the only solution is to ban people from schools.

If I were here parents I'd hire as many lawyers as I could afford and divorce myself from the ridiculous nanny state that brought this about.

A good lawyer should be able to get some money for the family because she didn't have a weapon she had a knife. If someone was threatned then it would be a weapon till that point it's just a knife. The school system is going to end up looking stupid.

I remember when I was a kid in the UK,me and my buddies used to be keen on the whole survival/outdoors thing...We used to buy camping and army type stuff, along with sometimes(gasp!!)knives.

We never did anyone any harm with any of our camping survival gear, and in fact we did a school presentation on the subject-which entailed us bringing a range of knives to school, amongst other things(like dead animals).
Teachers loved it-we got an A for the project.

I really never thought I would say this but,Ah those were the days...
Imagine trying that sort of thing nowadays...

A good knife does not make a little kid a terrorist, especially as its used for cutting up her lunch..for gods sake the planet has gone completely mental.
Imagine how this girl and her family must feel about this.
Its horrible.

I hear you all clearly.

Its turning into a NANNY COUNTRY where everything no matter how innocent is prosecuted like they wanted to take over the school.

I guess then we should ban scissors, pencils, pens, paper rolled up into a bat, chalk, rubber bands, paper clips, staples, chairs, student desks, nail filers, and rulers!

All of those things can easily be made into a weapon, thusly they are banned from prisons.

Are we going to treat our children like they are in prison?

Its not a weapon until its used as a weapon, before that, its just a knife! Just goes to show you that the teachers and headmasters need a CAT scan. They appear to be suffering from brain damage.

I agree mike, if she was using it is as a weapon, then maybe, but for gods sake she used it to cut a damn steak. Do they expect her to pick it up with her bare hands and take bites out of it, risk choking? Absolutley ridiculous waste of our tax dollars, and an unneeded stressful situation for a five year old girl. I can even understand the school taking the knife and calling the parents to tell them, they cant send their child to school with a knife. But to go as far as they did, is just unexceptable.

I didnt go to school in the 70's, I went to high school in the mid 90's, and even in california, I carried a pocket knife every single day. No one even thought twice about it, granted it was northern california, and a small town. But good god in ten years look how far things have gone to hell. I used to also have my shotgun and my rifle in my truck, in the school parking lot everyday. I was never arrested, never suspended, never even told to not bring it on school property. What the hell is going on, and when are we going to have enough of this crap?
