"w00t" crowned word of year by U.S. dictionary

www.reuters.com

BOSTON (Reuters) - "w00t," an expression of joy coined by online gamers, was crowned word of the year on Tuesday by the publisher of a leading U.S. dictionary.

Massachusetts-based Merriam-Webster Inc. said "w00t" -- typically spelled with two zeros -- reflects a new direction in the American language led by a generation raised on video games and cell phone text-messaging.

It's like saying "yay," the dictionary said.

"It could be after a triumph or for no reason at all," Merriam-Webster said.

Well that sucks. This year's word of the year seems to have downgraded in quality. At least the previous years' 'truthiness' and 'plutoed' showed more creativity.

'w00t' seems more suited for The Urban Dictionary.

So what do you folks think? Is this good news or more of a sad reflection of the state of society?

What do I think? I think it deserves a w00t! As a former WoW player I think this rocks! Last years word "truthiness" also rocked, as I am a HUGE Colbert fan. So to all those peoples voting on the word of the year, w00t to each and every one of you!

I think it's a bunch of crap. Stupid gamers are takin the credit for us oldschool h4x0rz painstaking late-nite labors. They have no claim to our l33t w00tisms. Most of them were probably born in the 90s.

The fact that the "word" made it into the dictionary is bad enough but to be named new word of the year is simply moronic.

First, walk down a city street and ask 100 people (at random) what w00t means and I'm guessing more than half will look at you like you're nuts. Possibly more.

Second, it isn't even a word in that it consists of letters and numbers and, technically, would be unpronounceable.

Can you substitute the 0's with o's and put woot on a scrabble board? I doubt it.

more proof that our society is going to hell in a handbasket.

What's next? lol becoming a word? I can see it now, I'm in a heated game of scrabble and I pop omgijmp to score two triple word scores and my wife will say "what the hell is that?" and I'll say Oh My God I Just Made Poop and she will say "uh, ok and then she'll beat me with brb or something and society will come crumbling down.

I've actually heard the latest batch of college freshmen saying 'lol' in lieu of 'hahahaha'.

So what you guys are saying is that language shouldn't evolve? I bet people were saying the same thing back in the 60s with "groovy".

it should but not if it includes words that are unpronounceable as a result of a mix of letters and numbers. that's text, not words.

Ok you have a point with the whole numbers and letters thing, I always hated algebra! But on topic, I still do not see why people should be ashamed of this! I say whoot (that’s how I spell it) on a daily basis!

Beach, the use of "lol" in real one on one conversation does worry me; call me a hypocrite if you must. What satisfaction does one get out of "lol"; I tell ya a good hearty chuckle is so satisfying!

It certainly is a sign of the evolutionary back step that we have collectively taken.

When is "INDEED!" going to catch on???

With that, I leave you with this,

w00t!

Jasn

P.S. truthiness rocks!
