Newly unsealed court records have revealed that the U.S. government issued a subpoena to Amazon.com seeking to obtain the identities of customers purchasing books through the Amazon marketplace

"The subpoena is troubling because it permits the government to peek into the reading habits of specific individuals without their knowledge or permission," Judge Crocker wrote in his ruling. "It is an unsettling and un-American scenario to envision federal agents nosing through the reading lists of law-abiding citizens while hunting for evidence against somebody else."

It is an interesting read. I guess the Bush Administration wasn't kidding when they said that the definition of privacy has changed. This is unsettling. It really makes you wonder when you ID will be used against you on sites such as ATS.

ATS, hurry and move all your servers to acountry where U.S laws don't aply.

That will keep their nooses out!

I think this is incentive for me to start getting my books the old fashioned way... a trip to Barnes & Noble! This is getting ridiculous in my opinion. When a person cannot order books off a website without the government wanting to know what everyone is reading then there is definately something seriously wrong with the country.

And the sad thing about this is I know too many people who would respond with the remark "Good! It will help them find the terrorist and put them away!"

I swear, Canada starts looking better and better the more I read.

Just make sure you don't pay with a credit card. I am not sure how far Canada is behind in this Big Brother scenario. It seems to be a world wide phenomena.
