Some thoughts about Aliens and UFOs

We've all heard about alien abductions and the little grey guys who are supposedly performing them. There are definitely people out there who believe without a doubt that they have come into contact with an alien intelligence. They often report that the interaction was both terrifying and profoundly meaningful to them. Sometimes the aliens perform biological experiments on the abductees or take samples from them. Sometimes the abductees are warned of a future apocalypse, either environmental or nuclear. Often they are told that they are in some way special and have been selected very carefully for some purpose that will be made clear to them at a later time. The abductees often describe little grey aliens with bulbous heads and bottomless pit wrap-around eyes who can control them with their gaze. Frequently they say the aliens do not operate with anything like an independent will, but are apparently part of a larger hive-mind (something like super-evolved bees). Many abductees report that there was one alien who seemed charged with looking after their psychological welfare, who knew and understood them intimately, and who showed a concern and even love for them as the others mechanically performed their tasks.

What are we to make of all this? The number of people who believe that they have had some form of contact with aliens is very high--estimated to be well into the millions in the US alone. Most of these people are otherwise sane. The question then is obviously: what the heck is going on, because clearly "something" is.

The first hypothesis, and one that you'll encounter most frequently if you ever decide to investigate, is that the aliens are real and from other planets. This hypothesis has two main variants. The first says that the aliens are performing the procedures on us to harvest genetic/reproductive material to create a hybrid race for some purpose (again, imagine a race of super-evolved cosmic bees harvesting our reproductive material in the same way that our earthly bees harvest the reproductive material of flowers). This theory itself has several versions, some more unpleasant than others. The second main branch of this "real" alein theory suggests a more benign possibility--that the aliens are simply scientists of some kind who are fascinated with us and concerned about our welfare.

Another hypothesis is the one set forward by Swiss psychologist Carl Jung--that aliens are in a sense the product of our collective imagination, just as goblins and fairies once were. The collective unconscious is generating them into reality for some important reason, and it is up to us to determine what that reason is. I personally find this explanation compelling, and modern physics, unlike the physics of Jung's time, cannot so easily discount it. Today's quantum mechanics and, at an even smaller scale, super string theory allow for the possibility that the human consciousness in some way creates the world that it inhabits. If you are a Jungian on this issue, however, you have to ask yourself why the collective human brain is making little grey men to haunt and facinate us. Psychedelic guru Terrence McKenna, a big time Jungian, had an interesting theory. He speculated that we were bringing the UFO and alien into existence as an antidote to modern science and industrialization, which he believed were leading us to our doom. In McKanna's theory, the UFO is something like an alarm bell, but also an antidote to the materialistic-Western-scientific-paternalistic way of viewing the world. The UFO is the monkey wrench which shows our science up for what it is, and suggests the endlessness of possibility out there. It reminds us of our limitations but also of our potential.

Very well said, Silenceisall.

flagged and starred.

Somewhere, back in my own ramblings on ATS, there is a thread which covers a bit of the same turf you wish to discuss.

Here it is...

There is meat in what you are postulating. I remember that Graham Hancock also touched on the subject in his book Supernatural.

A warning to members responding... the discussion of illegal substances. They're not welcome on ATS at the present time as per the Terms and Conditions;

2e.) Illegal Activity: Discussion of illegal activities; specifically mind-altering drugs, computer hacking, criminal hate, sexual relations with minors, and stock scams are strictly forbidden.

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Looking forward to an intelligent debate on this topic.

Thanks. I won't bring up the subject again, although I think that particular substance is of relevance, as is '___'.

'___' also occurs naturally in the brain and can be discussed in medical terms. Discussion of illegally produced and distributed substances, however, are not.

I liked the second theory, it may be our counciousness that is weaving this UFO phenomenon... like we dreamt abt the fairy tales...

Yeah. Quantum physics has basically validated the role of our consciousness (and unconsciousness)? in the transition of waves to matter. An electron acts like a wave until you observe it, at which point it becomes a particle....

Great thread. I read Schrodinger's Cat once and admit that 90% of it went right over my head, but I do remember one little bit that said "we create reality to be what we think it is". I've agreed with that statement many times throughout my life when something's happened and I KNEW that I caused it, even though that was "impossible". I believe anything's possible. ANYTHING at all. If there's room for it (whatever IT is) then it'll find it's place and exist.

I read it SC recently myself and thought it presented a good overview. I would recommend the Holographic Universe by Michael Talbot for anyone who is interested in the influence of human intention on matter.

There is a theory that I've come up with that also links UFOs and quantum physics. It's the idea that the two represent twin outer-limit poles of human experience. Both are virgin territory in a sense, and therefore more apt to be shaped by our consciousness and intent (I’ll expand on this if anyone wants me to). The idea came to me from reading physics books and from some comments made by people who have seen UFOs that the ships sometimes seem to be tied to their consciousness in some way, moving in a given direction that the witness knew it would. W Strieber--who I have some trouble with--mentions this. I have had a similar experience myself.

It's very possible it's a collective consciousness creating and manifesting the modern day aliens. Something you might want to look up realting to this is the subject of tulpas within indian mysticism.

Absolutely, Tibetan Mysticism ties in nicely to the whole idea. I am convinced there is something to this, and the more people were aware of that, the better off we would all be.

I like the tulpa idea, it fits nicely with "the universe is a giant thought" theory too. If we could think all the bad stuff out of existance, couldn't we have heaven on earth?
