Federal court strikes down refugee agreement

The United States is not a safe country for refugees, the Federal Court said Thursday as it ruled that Canada will no longer have the right to turn back asylum seekers at the border.
In the surprise judgment, the court found that Safe Third Country Agreement breaches the rights of asylum seekers under the United Nation Refugee Convention or the Convention Against Torture.

This could have been posted in 'above politics' as a Canadian item, but I think it's critical that Americans understand what this ruling means. Though our Prime Minister "Steve"and his minority government have been dubbed "Bush Lite" for their poodle-like devotion to the present US regime, the Courts have not yet been co-opted. And what (i)they(i) recognise is that rendition and torture are no longer considered anathemas south of our borders. This is friends, talking to friends, here...
The government will, of course, appeal the ruling.

Thanks for the post, it will be interesting to see how, or if, it plays on U.S. msm... You're right, "it's critical that Americans understand what this ruling means," especially in light of 2 very important facts. The one you mention, "friends, talking to friends, here...," and the sad fact that this rogue government of ours is responsible, directly or indirectly, for creating the world's largest refugee crisis ever. At last count I think it was 4 million people, mostly Iraqis, displaced by the Bush regime.

Thanks also to Canadian federal judge Justice Michael Phelan and his truly landmark ruling. I hope more of my fellow Americans will stop and listen to our very good "friends" to the north.

Of course you know, if you Canucks keep setting such a good example to the world, and depending how things go here in Nov. 2008, you may have many more friends stopping by, seeking shelter from the storm of hate and murder these neocrazies would like to really unleash on any who get in their way.

I caught a bit about this in the Globe and Mail the other day and was thinking of posting it... but then I forgot.

I have some concerns over this, but I agree that it's an important ruling in it's commentary on humanitarianism in the US.

I remember the day when torture was simply unacceptable in any form to all us Westerners. Simple mentioning it as a possibility was enough to have you upbraided in most circles.

Sad to see humanity slipping away.
