Wash. School Calendar Forgets Christmas

They made a list, but they should have checked it twice.

In a December newsletter to the families of elementary school students, Spokane Public Schools' list of "important dates" didn't include Christmas.

Hanukkah, Human Rights Day, winter break, the Islamic holy day Eid al-Adha, first day of winter and Kwanzaa all made the list. But no Christmas.

"It was absolutely an error of omission," district spokeswoman Terren Roloff said. "In our efforts to be inclusive, we missed the obvious."

Of course some parents complained that "Christians are being overlooked in favor of other cultures and beliefs."

Um, in America? I don't think so...Ho, Ho, HO!

There was a similar incident of inclusion here in a neighboring city at a public elementary school this year.

I can't seem to find a report on local media, but it was all over the news. The school had set up their annual Christmas scene which included a nativity scene, a couple hanukias, and the standard Santa with his trimmings.

A number of Muslim families complained about Islam not being recognized among the other religious celebrations. I don't recall the exact percentage of Muslim students attending the school, but it was significant.

So it turned into a big conflict and the school held a meeting so all interested parents could voice their concerns and make their suggestions. The Muslims made their case as anyone would, but the Christians... Sweet Jesus they went nuts! It's like to them it was the end of the world that another religion's holiday could be observed at the same time as theirs. One lady I swear was foaming at the mouth screaming, "The only people not being respected here are Christians!"

In the end the school decided to add a little statue of Mohammad to the scene. Baby Jesus didn't seem to mind.

I believe the district spokeswoman in this Washington matter. Schools are in a turmoil to make everyone happy these days. If these controversies continue, the only option will be complete sterilization of any religious observation in the schools.
