The last two points you made are exactly what I was talking about. You don't fight a defensive war in the jungle when you can fly your planes over to Hanoi and bomb the place to dust.

First of the US is like 3 million square miles of ground.

Both coasts have a huge naval battery of ships.

We have a world wide visual of all the ocean lanes around the world.

We have air superiority.

So an invading forces would first have to mass without making it noticeable. Considering we can see and track down to a simply convoy of trucks moving through any country would make it impossible.

So you would have to knock out all of the satellites or the ability to retrieve information from them for lets say more than a period of 3-4 months. Considering that how long it took to build and man the invansion force for Iraq.

You would have to prevent US spy aircraft from making overflights over your departure point. Considering the lose of all sat-intl would prompt high security response from all available US spy aircraft.

You could use container ships sailing from China or HK or some large port in your country and have containers loaded with troops in underground bunkers trucked to the ports. Although the casualty rate inside the containers would be pretty high even before they arrived at a US port.

So the problem becomes a logistics matter, how do you move that much equipment and ships and everything else needed for an invasion with out the US sending out either a naval armada against you, sinking you from standoff with a sub, or blowing you to bits from a high altitude bombing run ?

So that leaves the Canadians or the Mexicans. Neither of these countries posses the hardware or military infrastructure needed to invade the US. What if China made a pact with Mexico to bring in tons of equipment and people over say a 8 year period. Mexico allows them to build bases and infrastructure and Mexico begins trading food stuffs to China. Over time you could secretly move enough military hardware right underneath our noses, except we would see all the new construction so you would have to build everything underground like in North Korea. Then you would have to convice the people of Mexico to swarm the border with your troops in cover of darkness in every shape and size vehicle and mass swarm over the border. Get enough men and vehicles across the border and drive them out at least a mile or two into the US and then block all the highways and access points south to the border, this would allow the invading (people) to run amuck and capture, destory, steal and disperse across the area starting chaos, this diversion would allow for larger military assets to cross the border with relative ease. The US military would have to mobilize ground units to regain control and access to the border areas and if the enemy force could mass enough numbers they would span out like a wild fire almost impossible to contain.

The US would be forced to destroy infrastructure items like freeways, bridges, overpasses etc to contain the flow and make access further inland more difficult.

We don't really know what war is like.....

Well, the Taliban were well armed with rifles as much as the civilian US population could be. Almost every Afghan adult man has a gun.

in the face of mechanized opposition, they collapsed immediately.

On the other hand, if they, or the Iraqis, had high quality (i.e. very modern) anti-armor missles and anti-aircraft missiles it would have been very different.

Only one missile (Russia's Kornet, roughly like US Javelin) could really do anything to US armor in Iraq, and the Iraqis didn't have very many and weren't trained to use them.

As of modern times... the obvious answer is the USA. Christ, I would feel terrible for any foreign soldier who had to walk down the street in Houston Texas

It may not be that difficult to invade because Canada and Mexico are not difficult to invade?
