Whale Found Deep in Brazil Rain Forest

(AP) -- An 18-foot minke whale ran aground on a sandbar in the Amazon jungle some 1,000 miles from the ocean, Brazilian media reported Friday. Globo television broadcast images of dozens of people gathered along the Tapajos River splashing water on the animal, whose back and dorsal fin were exposed to the hot Amazon sun. Sea creatures rarely venture so far into fresh water.

Well that's just strange. I really don't know what else to say other than what a weird thing to happen. I'll see if I can find any follow up to this news.

Oh, snap! It wasn't so 'breaking news' after all. No matter, it was still within the past 48 hours.

So they've freed the stranded whale, but now they've lost track of it. It is still believed to be in the Amazon Jungle, though:

I personally think this is due to Global Warming! As is everything else that goes wrong these days!

How often does this happen? I immediately recall the humpbacks that got stuck in the San Francisco bay.

I find it hard to believe a whale, which most of them are relatively intelligent, just "got separated from the group" and swam that far in fresh water.

According to minkewhale.org it is not known if they follow seasonal migration patterns. If they do not, it seems reasonable that they could be very sensitive to changes is food availability. A shortage of food would send them inland to search. Any further abnormal incursions could be an indicator of this.

Thanks for the post. I saw this story on the Communist Network News today.
I found it very strange that the whale would go so far without realizing that it is lost. Perhaps there is more to this story that we will be told. Perhaps the whale was dropped there by Aliens? Who knows.

You know, I was wondering if out of place animals getting lost happens more often than we know, and if it's happened in ancient history before. Could explain some as yet unexplained fossil discoveries in places the creatures weren't expected to be found.

Not only is this because of Global Warming, but also because Whales are attention seeking sea creature know it alls!

It knows damm well that it's completely lost and rather than ask for directions it's pretending to know exactly what it's doing, and then to ram the point home it's doing it again!

Maybe the whale doesn't speak the same language, being that it's a salt-water creature in a fresh water environment. So it it's not that it didn't ask for directions, but it mistranslated the directions.

It should have asked a croc for directions! Those things are bilingual

Your on to something there Beach. It's sonar is ##-up, probably and it went for more quiet water. Their sonars are used for communication and navigating and some like the Humbold whale can pick up signals over litterately thousands of miles.

Our oceans are not only a polluted place, it's also a noisy one. Noise from millions of vessels, their propellers and sonars. The survialence submarines do with that gear should be worse than torture to sea mammals. Their biological system simply errs. Could also be because of pollution confussing or shortcircuiting their sense of smell.

Most likely I think it is the myriads of viberations of odd frequencies going through our oceans. Even in the shallow sounds and belts in the waterways of Denmark we now see this phenomenon often, with sperm whales ending up in a harbour bassins a 100 miles down a fjord of brackish water. An instance a couple of decades ago made headlines, partly because it was a white fin whale, but also because it stayed for two seasons without ever leaving the fjord before it died.

It's definitely a biological disturbence they suffer and lose their abilities. The result is often seen as mass strandings.

Last I heard it painted its face with indeginous clay and is going about villages knocking on doors declaring 'package, special delivery' land whale, ahem, land package.

That whale is on the verge of an evolutionary breakthrough. I'm sure he'll grow legs and crawl out of there if we all just leave him alone for a few thousand millenia.
Oh wait! I see that he's already going around town knocking on doors and that he apparently has some sort of delivery job. Good for him.

I don't think this has to do with global warming. Solar Storms and things like that tend to screw up a good many animals' navigation systems, i think it is probably something similar to that.

I can see how global warming might cause a whale to beach on an ocean shore or something, but not to swim up the Amazon. Animals have pretty dependable systems but they do falter from time to time on their own.
