It Begins - Turkish Gunships Bomb Villages in Northern Iraq

news.bbc.co.uk

Turkish military helicopters have bombed suspected Kurdish rebel positions in northern Iraq, Iraqi officials have said.

Several empty villages and an abandoned police post were hit without causing casualties, the officials said.

The strikes came as Ankara said four Turkish soldiers were killed in a clash with Kurdish rebels in Sirnak province.

Turkey has threatened large-scale attacks into Iraq to prevent Kurdish rebels launching attacks into Turkey.

Well it seems to just keep getting worse and worse there. It seems to be only a matter of time before the turkish troops invade. One can only imagine how much this could de-stablize northern Iraq and the whole region.

as your OP said, the Turks made strikes on an abandoned village & a defunct police station...

wow they are really tip-toeing.... i guess it's either respect of USA power--
or the Turks are positioning (as in a chess move) for further escalation (thats my take on the developing situation)

I think they are testing the waters to see what we will do if anything. Personally with this Presidents track record....it wont surprise me if he lets the Turkish army walk all over northern Iraq. He wants to keep Turkey on friendly terms. They are a key strategic country.

Since the Americans agreed to share intelligence with the Turks about the PKK, I suspect the Yanks already knew this was coming and it was them who told the Turks of these locations.

I'm somewhat curious to know what kind of helicopters the Turks used in this attack. It would be somewhat funny in a way if they were AH-1 Cobras, since the Turks do use them. Once again, American armanent all over the region being used potentially against our own benefit. If this does make matters worse for us, anyways.
