Foriegn Movies Anyone?

In the Netherlands everything gets subtitles and nothing except children's movies get dubbed over. It really helps you learn foreign languages faster.

I have seen a lot of foreign movies, but I always forget the titles. If we don't count English movies, you should really see Amores Perros by Alejandro Gonz�lez I��rritu. Mifunes sidste sang by S�ren Kragh-Jacobsen is nice if you Dogma '95 movies like Idioterne or Breaking the Waves (although it's technically not a Dogma '95 movie, it's in a similar style). A nice Dutch movie is Spoorloos.

Great foreign movies !

KrazyYvan, JJ annaud, the director of STALINGRAD went to issue (one mounth ago) another animal movie with tigers (Deux freres >> 2 Brothers...), I don't know if it's going to issue in USA, but anyway, in this kind of movies, you don't need many subtitles.

This director (JJ annaud) made a few years ago another movie based on an animal hero : L'ours (the bear)...

And also, I eprsonnaly don't like the esthetism of the director of this one (Enki BILAL, a comic drawer CQFD) but the "mystical" atmosphere of this movie may find some fans on ATS)

I do. I enjoy them a lot. Most are martial arts, but not all.

Buitiful, Ip Man, The Man from Nowhere, A Prophet....

The list could go on... they bring insight on other cultures.

The only one i have watched was REC. It was in spanish, a horror flick. The movie Quarentine is basically a scene for scene copy of this movie.

I try to watch as many movies from as many countries as I can. Idea being if Im too broke to travel there I might as well check out their cinema. Just as a warning some of these movies are definitely pretty graphic I don't watch torture porn or anything like that. Some are pretty hellish nonetheless others are comedies or light action flicks so just IMDB them beforehand to know what you are getting into.

Foreign movies are my favorites.
I also prefer older films, from the 80's on back.

I prefer a quality dub over subs.

My favorites are the Italian made films, of all genres, horror, giallo, police/crime action, nazisploitation, western.
These are often available on DVD with subs and/or dubs.

I also like horror movies made in Spain.

And Japanese films too. Especially Samurai.
Zatoichi is a long series of films and these are subbed.

Chinese martial arts too, especially the Shaw Brothers, these are usually available in sub/dubs.

The only other subtitled film I've watched is The Eye, which was a sixth sence sort of film.
Talking about dubbed films, it always amazed me that they dubbed american accents over the first Mad Max film. There were two versions shown on telly. sometimes American accents and sometimes Australian.

City of God is another favorite.

And I quite like the french movies Mesrine and 22 bullets.

Yeah this is a great film. I'm a HUGE Shane Meadows fan I can't wait for This Is England '88 and '90.

I'd also suggest 'Once Upon a Time in the Midlands' and 'A Room for Romeo Brass' to anyone who likes any of the above films.

Have you seen Takeshi Kitano's version of Zatoichi? Or the latest one "Zatoichi, The Last"? Big fan of the Former the latter not so much.

More than watching foreign movies per se, I watch directors.

I have watched all Fellini movies so many times, I can now speak fair Italian.

Ingmar Bergman same as Fellini but I can't speak Swedish.

I know it's not a movie but I recently watched a Danish TV series called Forbrydelsen (The Killing), which was excellent.

I understand that an American remake has been filmed.

In addition a second series is scheduled for airing in the UK in Autumn and a third series is planned.

The original Swedish Wallander and the French Spiral are decent viewing.

My brother has been raving about The Killing, I've tried to find it on iplayer, but its not on there. I'm not normally very good at commiting myself to a series. Short attention span

There was 12 episodes in The Killing.
I watched them all on iPlayer but they took them off about 2 weeks after the final episode aired.
It was compulsive viewing.

I'll let you know if it's repeated, I think it maybe on YouTube but I don't watch much on there.

Know what you mean about committing to series, I tend to either work things out well before the finish, get bored with the lack of progress or something else crops up and I miss an episode or two.

I recently watched an incredible Greek movie called "Dogtooth." It's kind of disturbing, but it's very unique. It's about a family who don't let their three teenaged children leave the area around their house. They've seriously distorted the kids' view of the world. The first scene is of the kids listening to a a taped language lesson that teaches them the wrong definition of words like "sea." It's very good.

Orfanato was good but my favourite foreign films are Banlieu 13 1 and 2
