According to the official web site of the US Navy there are currently 8 US aircraft carriers at sea as of November 7, 2007:
www.navy.mil...
USS Kitty Hawk
USS Enterprise
USS Nimitz
USS Eisenhower
USS Lincoln
USS Washington
USS Truman
USS Reagan
In addition there are 15 amphibious warfare ships underway and 6 of them are helicopter carriers:
USS Wasp
USS Essex
USS Kearsarge
USS Boxer
USS Bohomme Richard
USS Iwo Jima
I have been watching this web site for a long time and these are the largest numbers I have ever seen. Usually there are 2 or 3 carriers listed as
underway and 5 to 7 amphibious warships.
Many of these ships are not in the area of the Middle East right now and some are in training cycles. Even so, any or all of them could move to the
Middle East in a few days or a week.
Another web site I watch states that when the Truman carrier battle group set sail on November 5th, it was the heaviest carrier battle group to be
assembled in a long time. It has twice the usual number of escort ships. This site is also reporting that the Tarawa Expeditionary Strike group (six
ships) deployed on around the same time as the Truman.

This may not mean anything is going to happen in the near future but it is sure unusual to have so many battle groups underway at one time.
