So, Jamestown was the first english settlement established in North America, right? Then it expanded, became the United States...(By the way, I'm kind of disappointed there's no "History" forum so I had to post it here, I suggest creating one)

I've a question, why is it not much popular and what is the current total population there?

Any conspiracy about Jamestown?

I don't think so, infact i believe they celebrate yearly the fact that they were the first english settlement.

EDIT: Take me lightly when i say the word 'believe' in this instance...

Yes, this year (2007) is the celebration of the 400th anniversary.

Although I must say I never been there, and perhaps, I'll be there someday.

Jamestown still exists, it's just very unimportant. It's a tourist attraction. What really spelled the end of Jamestown as far as it having any real importance was Bacon's Rebellion. Jamestown was burned to the ground during this conflict and, although it was rebuilt after the conflict, the capital had already shifted to Williamsburg. The leaders of Virginia decided not to keep using Jamestown as a capital because it was too swampy. Once Jamestown was no longer a capital, it just kind of faded in general importance.

Ah thanks for this, uberarcanist.

I take it that the Bacon's Rebellion was the first idea of starting the independence against the British. (Which led to the American Revolutionary War later in 1775, right?)

I think it's alleged inspirational effect on the Founding Fathers is overblown. For one thing, Bacon's Rebellion was a failure. Why would the FF model their revolution after a failure? Also, the motives were very different. But it is an interesting and frequently overlooked part of American history.

Jamestown was the first permanent English colony this is true. The first English colony however, was Roanoke. That in and of itself is a mystery.

"White landed on August 18, 1590, on his granddaughter's third birthday, but found the settlement deserted. He organized a search, but his men could not find any trace of the colonists. Some ninety men, seventeen women, and eleven children had disappeared; there was no sign of a struggle or battle of any kind. The only clue was the word "Croatoan" carved into a post of the fort and "Cro" carved into a nearby tree. In addition, there were two skeletons buried. All the houses and fortifications were dismantled. Before the colony disappeared, White established that if anything happened to them they would carve a maltese cross on a tree near their location indicating that their disappearance could have been forced. White took this to mean that they had moved to Croatoan Island, but he was unable to conduct a search; a massive storm was brewing and his men refused to go any further. The next day, White stood on the deck of his ship and watched, helplessly, as they left Roanoke Island."

A number of things could have happened to them, but it has never been fully explained.

I think the most logical explanation is that the settlement was enslaved by the Croatoan people and their descendants were absorbed into the tribe.

Quite possibly. I know there's probably a reasonable explanation..... I just wish we knew something definitive. Oh well.

Conspiracy? Of course!

Jamestown was established by the Virginia Company aka London Company. It was chartered by King James I and Financed by the Rothschild bank of London as the first permanent English settlement in America - solely for profit. As a matter of fact, the first slaves were brought to America there by the East/West India Companies, financed by..... !!!!111111111~~~~~~~~
