Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes.

Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant
use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia.
Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and
the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human
rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look
the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations,
long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are
rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived
common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals;
communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems,
the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the
domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost
exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are
made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state
is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the
government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government
regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship,
especially in war time, is very common.

7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the
government over the masses.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend
to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public
opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders,
even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the
government's policies or actions.

9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a
fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power,
creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only
real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated
entirely, or are severely suppressed.

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and
tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for
professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression
in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are
given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to
overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism.
There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist
nations.

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed
by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government
positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from
accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and
even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete
sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even
assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting
numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist
nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

Seemingly to me, IMHO, about 3/4's of that list could easily apply to other nations and countries and not entirely or solely: America.

You bet, the similarities are enough to make one raise an eye-brow or two, especially when you apply this same list to other nations government...seems that Fascisim is quite prevelant, or so it seems, eh?

What powerful or culture rich country doesnt do this? this is no sign of fascism

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

this has no basis on facts and generalises the whole country based on a few unconnected events.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

again this is a generalisation of everyone based on the actions of a few and anyways how is a war on terrorists not their fault? trying to justify terrorism here? i mean hello it is wrong no matter whos at fault.

4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

oh yea 3 percent of the budget is a disproportionate amount of funding alright and where is the military glamorized by the government? you want to control what people think now? its not one groups choice what people want to glamorize or not.

5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

lol oh please this is human nature how society is, and how is wanting to keep traditional ways a bad thing? anyways abortion is more common in a fascist state than a free nation, abortion is not right in any society, homosexuals arent suppressed at all except by some people(not the govt) also i dont see the government representing itself as a guardian of anything so i dont see where anyone gets that

6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

guess all of europe is fascist too, more media companies there are state owned than in the US and canada

7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

this is just assumption by mainly a paranoid few

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

lol ok if you say so, i dont see this often at all

9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

no this just shows corruption and greed- human nature

10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

riight, this is just bs with no facts suggesting such is true

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

lol ok thats just funny, what hostility can you point out? only isolated incidences that arent related

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

lol no, liberals prefer to do anything they please and dont like rules and cry foul if they disagree

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

this occurs in every government free or not

14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

this is just ignorance of the election process and being sore losers

I do agree that we are having problems here but that is what elections are for, what would scare me is an atempt to interfere in this election. I hope things have not gone that far.

Amuk, good point.

Certain bloodlines have taken over every nation/country on Earth.

Systematically slaughtering the original inhabitants and interbreeding with those allowed to survive.

Native Americans had a good saying that speaks volumes for those paying attention...

Get your facts straight.

US defense spending was 'scarecely' over 3% of GDP on defense in 2002, and the proposal for 2003 ws to increase it to maybe 4%. That's a drop in the bucket compared to what we spend on other programs.

Has anyone lived in, been too, or even heard of a small South East Asian country called Brunei Darusallam? I used to live here, and its quite a wonderful place to live (if not religiously strict).

The Sultan of Brunei was once the richest man in the world, untill Gates took over... now his wealth is sliding but he's still richer than any of you ever will be... When i lived there (untill 11 years ago) there were no taxes, the Sultan paid everything, he had an open air Michael Jackson concert for his birthday and let everyone come free of charge, and opened a theme park as big as disneyland (once again free of charge) for his birthday... the only drawback is it is a strongly religious country (they wanted to preserve tradition as there are many westerners there). they are not anti-western and dont get involved in world politics... i think brunei is at least 95% corruption free and a great place to live as a kid (not a teen though) or as a single adult

Esoterica, he said "budget" not GDP. (Gross Domestic Product)

Regardless, USA budget for military machine exceeds any other expenses.

USA's military spending is approx. 50% of the entire worlds military expenditures.

Build more weapons to KILL KILL KILL more Earthlings.

We can always close down a few more hospitals, cut some funds to education and cut veterans benefits and healthcare.

Missed that. But his number (3%) is from GDP. Maybe he got his words mixed up.

Social Security.

This is a bad thing? :p

Government spending on education has gone up, as has Medicare. In fact, spending too much on health care is a major issue.
