Smoking in Vehicles with Minors to be Banned?

www.ctv.ca

A small Nova Scotia town could soon become the first Canadian community to ban smoking in any vehicle that's carrying a minor.

"We've decided to the age limit should be 18, because there are people who are dealing with immature immune systems," Wolfville Mayor Bob Stead told CTV Atlantic. "Their bodies are growing quickly."

I think this is interesting.

Wolfville is the town in question, and isn't too far from where I live. The fact that this is a very small town is certainly a leading contributor to this being the first, of possible many, to tackle this issue.

However, the government telling it's citizens that they can not smoke in their own vehicle, if they have a young child in it, is teetering a little too close to Big Brother for me.

As a non-smoker, and a strong supporter of children's rights, I am still skeptical on this one.

Some citizens can be paying several hundred dollars a month on a new vehicle, and the government is going to tell them that they can not smoke in it? Even as a non-smoker, I am not sure if I agree with that.

Council will be voting on this in the middle of November, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out. If this legislation is implemented, should be interesting to see how it is received and governed.

Will other Canadian cities and towns follow? American cities?

Thoughts?

I don't think it should have to be banned but I think people who smoke should be smart enough to realize it's not a good idea to do it around children. Not only because of the health risks but also because it doesn't set the best example if you don't want your children to smoke when they grow older.

If this is the result that the government is looking for, anything less than implementing new legislation will be met with complete failure.

How many people would wear their seat belt if they didn't have to? Hell, how many people wear it even though they are supposed to?

I don't think there is any in between here. Either you go for it, or you don't.

When it comes to protecting innocent children from worthless scum parents, I'm behind Big Brother all the way. Protecting those who cannot protect themselves are one of the few if not the only times I support government intervention into the life of an individual.

Will it be enforced? Doubtful. Most likely the same as seatbelts. If someone is pulled over and there's a baby in the back seat and someone's smoking... I'd rather beat their face to a bloody pulp with a live porcupine... but a ticket will do for the sake of civility.

I agree that parents should have a little more sense, considering the information that we have these days. However, I think you take this to the extreme. As a child, both of my parents were smokers. Even though they made small efforts to minimize the amount of smoking they did around me, it was still a daily thing.

So, were my parents scum?

?

You advocate the brutal death of parents who smoke in the presence of minors? Is that justified?

I stand against the death of any individual, regardless of their past indiscretions. And you stand for the brutal torture of a mother who smokes in the presence of her child. Wow, that really takes me back.

Your brutality concerns me.

This coming from a non-smoker who agrees that parents should not smoke in the presence of minors.

When the parents have full knowledge of what they are voluntarily and therefore intentionally doing to their child... yup, scum.

I didn't say death. I said face beaten to a bloody pulp, and I stand by those words. Brutal perhaps, but nowhere near as harmful as what they may be doing to the innocent child.

I consider these acts to be on the same level as intentionally starving, beating, or molesting a child.

Do I think it should apply clear up to 18? No. I think the cutoff should be at most 16, with increasing severity for younger children, and very harsh action for infants.

I'm a smoker and I can't stand seeing parents smoking with their kids in the car. I don't do it. Actually I don't smoke in front of or around my kids meaning I won't stand next to them and smoke. I take a walk, step outside...whatever.. I'm not hiding the fact that I smoke from them, sure the smell is still on my clothes (yeah yeah I know all the dangers of secondhand smoke and how smokers in general are horrible people), I just choose not to do it around them. My husband is the same way. We also don't smoke inside our house, nor do we like smoking indoors. To me, part of the enjoyment of a having a smoke is doing it in the open air.

So yeah I'm all for the ban on parents smoking in the car with their kids..
especially dummies that have the windows mostly up
