Hi folks,

I know this is off topic but as it mentions Halo 3 in the title I thought why not.

I just wanted to pay my respects to Spartan 117; he will be greatly missed by all.

Peace.

I fully agree there are better things for kids and adults to do with their time (education, fitness and reduction of pollution/waste), but, it isn't up for me to decide.

I grew up playing video games. I played the original Zelda's and slew dragons ... I played Contra and killed evil soldiers and evil aliens and machines. I played all kinds of violent and non-violent games.

You know what? I have never been in a physical fight. I am more of a pacifist. I can hardly stand violence in movies and t.v. (in fact, I even turn away sometimes when I know something bad or embarrassing is about to happen
)

so with that fact, I have a hard time jumping on the bandwagon that video games are evil. What is the problem is the parents. If the parents don't spend time with their children and instill values and teach the difference between reality and fantasy. If the paents don't regulate the games they buy the children and what the child gets and plays when their not looking. Yes, I am against general snooping of the child's stuff, but, do it without them knowing, then if you know what they have, catch them red handed, then have a discussion.

When parents leave their job of rearing their offspring to the school system, after school programs, t.v., video games, and anyone but themselves in the pursuit of greed ... then you get the pandemic we have today. I will say the break up of the normal family is one of the things that have destroyed this country and our youth. No, I am not attacking non-traditional values/lifestyles in the sense some may be thinking ... what I mean is, 50+ years ago, there was a parent home and a parent working. People had kids, they stuck together; now we have people having intercourse as casual as a drink of water, we have two parents working. I know, both parents have to work if they are making minimum wage; but those who aren't, well, they are living beyond their means still. You can live a good life while still being a bit frugal. Money doesn't buy you the happiness, it comes from within. Something today's youth needs to learn.

This happened with music. I will agree that, if a child isn't properly reared, then music can be a bad influence, but again, that is the parent's fault. Teaching them not to use bad words and why. Restricting the ability to hear certain things.

The same argument can be made for t.v. If you think music and games are bad, then, television and movies are the worst. We should ban those. Lust, violence, greed, gluttony, profanity ... and that is just on the news. Springer (Jerry not the ATS one
), Xtra, and all that other sensationalist, fake, or the worst of society.

If your argument is what goes in makes the person ... then, with today's television, most are garbage. People are then afraid because they have been instilled fear through horror movies, they believe everyone is criminal because of shows like cops and the news focusing on the crimes not the humanitarians.

I guess what my argument is, FREEDOM. I would like people to be free to choose what they want, but still act moral and responsible in life and towards others. If you wish to revamp any structure in society; then, radio, television, and movies is the one. People perceive almost everything they see and hear as reality, even if it is only a very thin and focused slice of it. Even movies have pushed into the mind of most as being possibly real and create their own urban legends.

Instead of the regulation of video games and music; get petitions and have them sent out across the country. Let the media and production companies know, we want positive focus. This doesn't mean to censor the bad, when there is a social injustice being done by those in power against the masses, it should be shown. Bills and amendments should be widely public and given great attention. More truth, more straight-forwardness. But most of all, focus on the good samaritans, the volunteers, the people who give an sacrifice of themselves, the community projects ... enlightenment in, enlightenment out. That is, if you believe that these things affect our mind, then, if you get the majority of the input to be positive, the rest will follow. Those violent games you are worried about, well, people will not care for them because they are atrocious.

Let me finish with this, I don't care for most FPS games. Never been a Halo fan, never played Half-life (but the graphics were good), I found Gears of War boring after the first play through (not a big online gamer); I am just not really into guns much and games with them except a few exceptions. Grand Theft Auto was fun because it was a wide-open world, not for the AKs and flame-throwers. I like Oblivion because I like the sword-style adventure games, it reminded me of King's Field for PS1. I used to enjoy racing games. Now I play things like backgammon and canaan. I am getting old

Parents just need to spend time with their kids, they need to teach them right and wrong, they need to regulate what goes into their mind, they need to regulate what they themselves watch when their child is present. It isn't up to society or the entertainment industry to mold to what is right for children, it is up to the parent to mold the children into upstanding citizens. Placing the blame anywhere else is not taking responsibility. There are always a few bad seeds, but, the true bad seeds are much more rare than is put out there, and most kids that act out either had something traumatic happen, are abused, unregulated, unsupervised, unloved, etc.

If you can't do the time, don't do the crime; if you are unable to care for and rear a child properly, I guess, don't have sex or, if you have no willpower against your lustful desires, then, go under the knife. Don't bring a child in the world, disregard it, then, blame it and society when something goes wrong; 99.9% the blame lies in the parents not being there and doing their most important job when the child is young and learning. You can get most of the moral values engraved by 4-6 years old, doesn't mean you should stop paying attention then, but, make sure you are there to support them and teach them in the most critical years with your full support and love.

I know this view may be a bit unpopular, but, I feel it is right. Do I agree with games like Manhunt? Not in particular. But it is no worse than Doom. It is for mature adults. There aren't a lot of those.

Firstly, he isnt dead, he will be missed until the next chapter, watch after the credits.

NOW
back onto topic

I am a gamer, and I have been since I could turn on the console, I grew up playing all kinds of violent games, street fighter, mortal combat, started playing halo at about 10 I would say, and you know what, I am a generally peacefull person, interesting isnt it, sure I can argue and get into a fight, non violent, but still, we are all human. To say a video game makes you violent is just insanity, humans are violent by nature, most animals are, but since of how we have evolved into the world we have, we dont allow these intincts, which is a good thing IMO, i dont want to be killed any time soon. But the thing is, you are violent, or you are not violent, a video game doesnt change that, unless of course someone is doing somehting insane like making you play non stop for years and years, that would mess you up, but why look at video games for the cause, why not paintball, or as I play religiously, laser tag. I am 16 years old, and I have ridiculously good aim with about any weapon, I got my aim from laser tag, counter-strike, and halo 1-2-3, does that mean I am going to go out and kill some people? does that mean I am going to go join the army? no, I am far to busy playing video games, plus I heard theres no respawn point in RL.

Its about 4am where I am as I am writting this, at a friends house, playing halo, so if it doesnt make sense, oh well, I might add on later.

From the words of Eminem

"They say music can alter moods and talk to you
Well can it load a gun up for you , and cock it too
Well if it can, then the next time you assault a dude
Just tell the judge it was my fault and i'll get sued"

Not just music but everything parents rant about...
and how right that is
If that man ever said anything intelligent, that was it

Dont laugh! But I think videogames has been conditioning our generation to face the inevitable of a final conflict with aliens.

I was at a gun range and it amazes me to see so many youths that shot really well, when I talked to them, Voila! They all play at least 10 hours a week of Halo, Tom Clancy series, Call of Duty, Half-Life, etc.

These kids are a natural at basic combat skills: target acqusition, quick aiming, situation awareness.

Oh pleas anyone who is involved in any activity that required fast precise reflexes will be better than your average slob at shooting, and a person who possesses no situational awareness is just borderline stupid. If you going to blame video games you better start blaming any kind of fast paced sport as well.
