The Paris- based al-Watan al-Arabi magazine said, according to well-informed sources, that the military and intelligence leadership in Moscow had prepared a plan to topple the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein by a military coupe or an assassination operation in order to protect the Russian interests in Iraq and the region and to block plans of an American occupation of Iraq.

Why would toppling Saddam protect Russian interests. Who is to say Saddam's replacement wont be a "US" puppet? Or worse yet, another Saddam!!

Assassinating Saddam would give the US the perfect opportunity to enter Iraq as a "peacekeeping/free election force". I had actually thought assasinating Saddam would be the perfect thing for the US to do.

Exactly, we don't need the Russian boy scouts going in and gassing all of Baghdad for us. Our SEALS or DELTA could easily "eliminate" Saddam and his 8 look a likes in a matter of hours. No matter what Saddam says we know he has weapons of mass destruction, and if he wont disarm himself it will be done the hard way. And then Bush and the rest of the US will turn around and say, well were in here now, we might as well take out Saddam while we're here, and finish what daddy left behind. No American "puppet" will take his place, we'll make sure someone who's literate and understands politics will take the throne...under our supervision probably...

good find Nyeff!

If the pot was sweetened for Russia I am sure they would help. For them, it's probably more about the oil then it is for the US.

It would make things pretty interesting if the Russians went in and took out Saddam, without the U.S. I'm sure the U.S. already has a plan for post Saddam, but if the Russians get there first it will cause a lot of problems.I doubt if Russia will do anything without running past the U.S. first.

The Russians are sitting on enough Oil to cripple OPEC in there own back yard!....I am thinking that it would hurt them if they US got Iraq up to speed so that its oil will go back on the market proper..just my 2 cents

What if Russia already has run it past the US and were given the green light? I thought America had a policy against assasinating foreign leaders - if so Russia could be doing America a favor as well as themselves.
