Paulson and Gutierrez Call for Permanent Moratorium on Internet Taxes

WASHINGTON, DC--U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson and Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez issued a statement today calling for the Senate to make permanent the moratorium on Internet access taxes and on multiple or discriminatory taxes on electronic commerce.

Good news for Internet Christmas shoppers. With the current extension to the 1998 Internet Tax Freedom Act set to expire in November, it appears that the permanent moratorium introduced by one democrat & two republicans (see additional link) is a shoe-in.

With electronic commerce gaining in worldwide acceptance, and an economic slowdown/recession almost a certainty...there doesn't seem to be much wiggle room left for the proponents of Internet taxation.

I think taxing the internet, or pay by email is great for the big corporations and the government, but why would it be of benefit to the consumer? To pay for 'infrastructure' that should have already been installed and running? Too bad the corporations were too busy profit taking and merging instead.

Personally, I could live without the internet if I wanted to. I probably would if ATS had a post by Snail Mail feature...
