MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Federal Aviation Administration cleared all airline traffic within 250 miles of Memphis on Tuesday, grounding an unknown number of flights around the country, because communications equipment had failed at the regional air-traffic control center there.

Thats completely understandable.

With the autoguidance systems in use today, a simple malfunction would easily shut down an entire airport for a while.

Unfortunately, this goes to show you how absolutely reliant we now are on automated systems.

CNN is calling the area affected 'The Hole' since all flights are being directed around Memphis. No flights ae allowed to pass through this airspace because the radio frequency has been lost.
