What if we are the beginning race?

I was driving home and was thinking about the expanding universe (though I sometimes ponder this might be because on our relational view from where we are), and a strange notion popped into my head.

What if we are the first intelligent life?

We really haven't been around that long in the overall timeline of the universe. I'd like to see some discussion on this; get points of view from others.

i doubt that is true there are more stars in the unverse than there are grains of sand on earth and in our star (the sun) ther are 9 planets on one planet earth there are millions if not billions of differnt forms of life the odds of there not being even a hint of life out there is far to high and to think we are the beginning of the entire universal race is rather depressing to say the least
