British space scientists and engineers will today submit detailed plans for a mission to help divert an asteroid which could collide with Earth in 2036. Apophis, a 240-mile wide remnant of the early solar system believed to be made mainly of rock, circles the Sun in an orbit that brings it close to the Earth every few years. It will pass within 22,400 miles of our planet in 2029 - closer than the satellites used in our communication systems.

It's 240 meters, not miles.

I'm confused. It could collide in 2036 but it will be that close in 2029? Why don't they try and get it then? Wait, I know, we'll all be wiped out by a comet in 2014 so what's the point?

Alarmist science.

hehehhe.

Apophis is the Egyptian Snake, he must be killed every night by Seth, otherwise Ra cannot be reborn as the sun in the next day.

I love the name.
