Public Service?

Hey guys, this is my first PTS and I think this will be the best place for this question. I am currently on a city appointed committee for my City's Library. We basically decide what should go in the library, what it's services are, etc... I have found out that the mayor of my town started off in this same board. My question is, how many of you guys are on city council or other types of positions in your city government, or other? Thanks!

P.S.- I hope to join the City Council someday soon, and any pointers or strategies you guys have will be much appreciated.
