Here is the cover to the 1978 edition of UFO magazine that makes the claim that my Hometown of Chester, Illinios was destroyed by ufos and then resurrected again. I wish I had the actual magazine(I'm working on getting a copy) it shows all kinds of pictures of main st. It's pretty funny and was kind of a big deal at the time since my town is so small (Pop. 5000). Anyway, thought I would share.

So what exactly happened? I mean, did anything happen at all? Why was the mayor pictured reading the story?

I'm pretty sure none of this really happned. I don't think these claims hold much water. I just found them humorous.

But suppose you were destroyed, then resurrected, but with no memory of it

Wait, were you around then?

Kleverone, is there a link that I am missing? I'd like to read the story. A weird thing happened with my great aunt with alzheimer's, my Mom was driving her around Prescott one day and everywhere they went she just kept tripping on how 'they' did a fantastic job recreating the town, it was almost identical! she kept repeating. My mom thought it very erie and even though she kind of laughed it off and chalked it up to her condition, it still gave her the hebegebes.

Yeah... have you lived there your entire life? Were you alive then? Did you ask anyone who may have been around at the time? Perhaps there was at least some kind of suspected UFO activity that was blown out of proportion and into the story on the cover of UFO Mag. If you could find the exact date, maybe you could check the archives of your local paper(s) for articles on anykind of strange sightings or occurances.

Sounds kind of cool. I just wish you had more than a picture of the cover of an old magazine to go with it. Hopefully you can dig something up here. And hopefully you are not somekind of regenerated alien creature, or else we'll have to give you your own board on here!

Did you see the new Simpsons movie? Im wondering if the writers of the show read up on this and made it a part of that story line..

As it was in the Simpsons movie, was a little town springfield.. Which in RL is an town in that state.. And it was destoried and they said no one would notice this little town.. They did rebuild it back up..
But in the movie, springfeild was on the border of states that where no where near eachother in RL..

IM just wondering if that has any ties to this story here?

Sounds like something straight out of the Twilight Zone. Although people during that past time frame were very interested in UFO phenomenon, it is a kind of strange story for that period, how much credibility does the magazine have? I hope you can find an old copy, maybe e-bay?

This is nonsense. Nonsense, I say!

When the aliens rebuilt Chester they did it all wrong. They completely botched reassembling that statue of Popeye. Originally his head tilted slightly to the left, but when the aliens rebuilt it, it slanted slightly to the right!

No, seriously, that's wicked cool. I wonder what the background of the article was...they must have had a staff writer or staff writer's girflriend who was from Chester or something. Or maybe there was a writer who did what we did...swung a little out of our way to look at what we were promised was "The world's largest statue of Popeye" and thought it would be kind of cool to pay a little tribute to the town.

Good luck getting ahold of the original magazine.

I grew up in the 70's and my father used to buy 2 or 3 of those UFO magazines every week. It was funny, too, because he never finished high school so he wasn't a big reader but he loved those mags. In fact, he even got me into them as a kid. They were as much fun to me as my comic books. It was the first place I ever read about Travis Walton and Kenneth Arnold.

My Dad died over two years ago and those mags are a great memory from my childhood with him. We looked forward to the editions every week and shared our fascination about their far flung stories. You know what they say that even the most outrageous ideas have at least some basis in the truth. I think that's what fascinated Dad and I the most - that anything is possible.

Thanks Dad for the memories and for my lifelong interest in the subject and thanks Klev for helping to "dig" up those memories for me with this thread.

This is like the time aliens sneaked into my house and stole all our vacuum bags.

That's so funny! It reminds me of Weekly World News

You should be able to verify that story with anyone older than you.

Sounds like a bunch of nonsense...I have to admit, those old magazines used to be very entertaining!!!

There's a pretty rare mental illness where the victim thinks that everyone he knows has been replaced by exact duplicates.

Check out Capgras's syndrome.

I know this is off topic, so I'll keep it short. I was surfing the net the other day, and ran across a photo of what has to be my doppleganger. I sent a copy to one of my brothers, he asked where I got the Canadian t-shirt.

It's so close it's creepy.

I also ran into my next-younger brother's doppleganger about 10 years ago, sis-in-law had walked up behind this guy and hugged him before she realized it wasn't her husband. So they set me up, I came around the corner and grabbed the guy from behind by the shoulders and started talking to him, he turned around, and I just couldn't figure out what was wrong, it was Todd but it was a little off. Then the real Todd popped out and we all had a laugh. The guy's voice wasn't quite right but face and build were exact. I've seen twins that weren't as close.

And Toddler isn't what you'd call a stock human. Dad used the chunky brush and the ugly stick on all five of us.

In Malaysia we've got plenty of those, they're called hantu raya and are usually employed as slaves to do one's bidding. Gotta be careful though, because they might decide to take over your identity instead of doing your work for you!

That would be my guess, several people in town still have copies, I just need to find someone who will let me borrow it and scan it on my computer.
